This morning I got the opportunity to speak at my son's school about Remembrance. This would never have happened years ago. I didn't think of myself as having anything to pass on and I doubted my capability to handle it. No longer.
I thought back to when i was a kid sitting in those assemblies, listening to the stories of older men in suits with medals. Where I struggled to connect the people and the stories to myself and what we should be remembering.
Today I wore my old uniform (haven't worn it since coming home in 08) so that the kids could connect the pictures to the man in front of them. I told them about life in the army and life in Afghanistan.
After showing them that i was a man, just like their parents or teachers. Then we discussed Why we remember. I told them about my brothers and sisters that came home draped in the flag. I told them that we serve the nation, yes, but in truth we serve for each other. We do crazy, brave, and heroic acts for the soldier next to you, because they would do it for you. I told them that we'd do it again because service is a calling. A calling to give for others, to give
mind,
body,
and soul
For the the soldier next to you,
For the Canadian next to you.
For you.
Lest we forget
Chimo y'all
