Reaching the top and seeing what’s on the other side.

A pastiche of remote monstrous giants right in front of you.

One could feel isolated and tiny, but not when you’re with a giant and great hat.

It is the end of the season for the highest mountains. So Maga hat insisted we go out on a high note - in a high place. A place we’d never been to.

So last night was a frosty and icy one, as we slept - or more accurately lay awake - looking at the wilderness and skies under a very bright moon. One of the advantages of not using a tent.

Right beside the mountain we’d ascend in the early morning before a long hike out.

This place is expected to be covered in deep snow by next week.

An enjoyable Fall afternoon with Maga hat.

A ridiculous place.

I posted a video from summit in this area a week ago. Yesterday Maga hat said we should go back for a walk - and so we did.

It was our third time in as many weeks for Maga hat and I to be in completely different mountain ranges. The one commonality was that all 3 are spectacularly colorful - each in its own way.

…but the weather was somewhat dreary and at this place, as we left the hordes of fall scenery seekers down in the valley bottom, we quickly found ourselves alone under a steady drizzle. As we gained elevation, a stiff freezing wind cut through me and a whiteout of clouds swept in so fast, it took seconds - no minutes. Turning the world ominous, grey, and at times only 20 feet in diameter.

…but Maga hat assured that we would be fine and given the conditions we had decided on a more modest ridge and summit as our destinaiton, and he was also quick to remind me of a lesson he taught me long ago: if one goes when nobody else will go, one sometimes is blessed to see things nobody else will see.

…and we did enjoy fleeting moments and glances of something very special. In their own way, these conditions are as beautiful as clear skies and sunny days.

As we descended from the upper reaches, we came upon a rugged looking moutnian woman and her daughter at a viewpoint we had seen some of the other adventurers make it to before retreating as the thick clouds and heavier rain came in.

She looked up and simply said: were you walking among the clouds?

Indeed we were.

Hundreds of miles away from the colroful and extremely high mountains Maga hat and I were in last week, we ventured into a lower but even more colorful range. You have to see it to believe it. I got to see it thanks to Maga hat.

A strange and impossibly beautiful place in the company of Maga hat.

A beautiful but tragic day.

Maga hat said knew where we could go for a little walk in the highest mountains.

The day was perfect. Clear, sunny, and calm. The colors were as vivid as can possibly be.

However, shortly after this pic, Maga hat IV plunged off a sheer face. So far we could not see him. Every effort was made, a companion on this journey offered that had she an additional piece of gear it would have been possible to set up a rescue belay.

…but nothing could be done.

Maga hat IV traveled many miles - horizontally and vertically. Protecting and guiding me on all terrain in wind, fog, rain, snow, sleet, hail. With him we were not only immune to the perils of the wild, but to the irrationality, and ugly hatred of Liberals.

We saw many things few get to see. He’s now on a different journey.
