On Tuesday, July 25, 2023, Kukwpi7 (Chief) for Simpcw First Nation, George Lampreau and council signed an official Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Barriere RCMP detachment in a ceremony held in the Chu Chua Community Hall.

Seated at the signing table was Simpcw Kukwpi7, George Lampreau and Deputy Commissioner, Dwayne MacDonald, Commanding Officer of the B.C. RCMP.

Some of the honoured guests present included RCMP Sgt. Rob Welsman, Barriere RCMP detachment commander, Cpl. Kyle Camalush, Staff Sgt. Shaun Begg, and Perry Smith. Members of the Clearwater RCMP Detachment were also present as invited guests accompanied by their detachment commander, Sgt. Grant Simpson.

The event was well attended by Simpcw band council, community members and invited guests, starting with an honour song presented by the Simpcw Drummers.

On Tuesday, July 25, 2023, Kukwpi7 (Chief) for Simpcw First Nation, George Lampreau and council signed an official Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Barriere RCMP detachment in a ceremony held in the Chu Chua Community Hall.

In a post on social media on July 17, Chu Chua Fire Chief Ron Lampreau from Simpcw First Nation put out a call to residents in Barriere, Chu Chua and Simpcw First Nation communities, asking for temporary housing accommodations for incoming additional fire crew members until the end of the summer.

In a conversation with Black Press, Lampreau said “We are looking to expand our Indigenous Initial Attack Crew, but the hurdle we are finding is that there is zero accommodations in Barriere and Chu Chua. Recently we posted on Facebook requesting support from both Barriere and Simpcw First Nation for possible accommodations to house additional crew members coming to us from other parts of Canada.

“I’m happy to say that some homeowners put their names forward and we have obtained at least one home board situation. We have flown in a new crew member from Moncton, New Brunswick who has already passed his Wildland Fire Fighter FIT Test. He’ll take his additional tests next week. We are super excited to have him join our team and he’s equally excited to be here.”

Community members in Heffley Creek refused to stand idle and watch another neighborhood fixture be vandalized.

Residents say they have grown tired of petty crimes putting small businesses at risk of closing and have organized the Heffley Creek Store Appreciation & Fundraising Dinner Event to help the store with repair and replacement costs.

Secretary-treasurer and event coordinator of Heffley Creek Community Hall Deb McDougall-Bergstrand says she feels happy to help out the store that has benevolently served so many in the community for over a century.

Officials in the Cariboo are urging residents and travellers to prepare themselves and their households as the wildfire situation continues to deteriorate in the region.

“The seasonal weather forecast is not going to improve,” said Gerald Pinchbeck, public information officer for the Cariboo Regional District’s (CRD), Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) and CRD communications manager, during a media update Wednesday afternoon (July 12).

“We are going to continue to see hot, dry conditions with little to no precipitation and lightning in the future.”

Stephanie, Chris and 5 month old Maddie from Sheep Wrangler Farms in Barhead, Alberta brought four sheep to show during the 2023 All Canada Sheep Classic in Barriere that ran from July 6 – 8 at the Agriplex located on the Fall Fair Grounds.

“We travelled through the night while Maddie was sleeping so as not to disrupt her schedule. We pulled a sod trailer from Alberta. This is our first year entering the Sheep Classic. We run about 500 Ewes, 400 Commercial lambs and about 100 purebreds, we both work full time and also have 150 head of cows to calve out and now we have a new baby, so you want to see no time in anyone’s life – that’s ours!”
