A vulnerable note for SMA Awareness(?) Month -

I want to talk about something I often avoid discussing publicly: my acute awareness of mortality and my actively limited life expectancy due to SMA.

Sometimes, I catch myself framing my diagnosis as an abstract, cosmic experience that I miraculously outlived and now simply live with and, while that is true, it’s only part of my reality. As my birthday approaches each year (September 18), I’m reminded of my own mortality and the certainty my future is uncertain regardless of how healthy I am today.

I intentionally try not to put too much thought into it, and avoid bringing it up so as to not make others uncomfortable, but it doesn’t change the fact my lifespan is still limited and I have already lived a thousand lifetimes as far as SMA is concerned.

I’m enormously grateful for the years I have already been given and I choose to make every extra second count. My work isn’t done just yet.

On a related note: I’ll be damned if this corrupt government takes me down with legislative changes like Bill 11. (More info in comments!)

Hi! I’m Karli, a mobility Disabled adult and wheelchair user… who outsources her muscles in order to survive and thrive. 🧑🏻‍🎤 I currently live in the Edmonton area (Beaumont) and I'm a writer, multimedia personality, consultant, and disability rights activist.

Are you an adult with a moderate amount of muscles to outsource who’s in need of a new and groovy job? 💪🏻

Rad! I’m currently looking for more PCAs to join my care team. NO EXPERIENCE OR CERTIFICATIONS NEEDED!

If you’re interested in working for me but worried you’re not qualified, please don’t be discouraged! I prioritize an equitable hiring process with nontraditional career paths—and that includes honouring all lived experiences. Previous experience in this field isn’t necessary, as most of the tasks I need performed day-to-day you already do for yourself (like getting dressed) and I’ll provide ongoing, PAID training for everything else!

💭 "But what’s a PCA?”

My PCAs are basically my real-life stunt doubles who assist me with things like...

✧ personal care (hygiene, showering, washroom trips, dressing, feeding, transferring/positioning, etc.)
✧ cooking/meal prep
✧ homemaking/organization
✧ cool stuff related to my work
✧ joining me on outings—or quiet nights in with snacks + tv
✧ other ordinary (& sometimes extraordinary!) human activities

The job is to help me live comfortably & efficiently while preserving my dignity. Like your personal life, every shift is a mix of routine & improv.

🌟 Qualities of a successful candidate

✧ punctual, responsible, reliable, fun
✧ detail-oriented
✧ willingness to learn/take direction
✧ critical thinker
✧ comfortable working chaotic good, fast-paced shifts AND quiet, calm ones w ample downtime
✧ BONUS: has cooking and/or makeup skills!

🌟 BREAKING NEWS: Alberta SMArt Asses Join Forces, Disability Joy Intensifies 🌟

As we move on from Disability Pride Month and onto SMA “Awareness” Month, I was overjoyed to finally get the chance to hangout with longtime internet friend, fellow SMA feisty statistic-breaker, my freaking BIRTHDAY TWIN, and overall badass Crip: Maddy!

Spending time with someone who “gets it” is one of the coolest things ever and I am so profoundly grateful to call Maddy my friend. After knowing each other online for 4 (?) years, finally meeting irl was equally exciting and natural. It felt like we’d been family all along. 💚

So in the spirit of August “Awareness”, here are 3 politicized issues to know that I’ll be discussing more in-depth this month:

👩🏻‍🦼‍➡️ Treatments for SMA exist in Canada (and globally)… but most provinces (looking at you, Alberta 👀) continue to deny coverage for adults unscrupulously.

👩🏻‍🦼‍➡️ Home care programs are entirely necessary for us to survive & thrive… but remain underfunded and antiquated.

👩🏻‍🦼‍➡️ Some of us work, some of us don’t… but *all* of us need health insurance and other disability supports. Things like forcing AISH to ADAP directly harm us!

We need non-SMA’ers to put more focus on ACTION over aimless awareness. Write your MLAs. Sign the petitions. Get your boots on the ground because ours don’t always reach (and dude, we’re exhausted!)
