In October 2017, astronomers observed for the first time the collision of two neutron stars; a cataclysmic event known as a Kilonova. This cosmic merger confirmed that such collisions forge some of the universe’s heaviest elements, including GOLD and platinum, scattering them across space.

The looped animation was created in the wake of that discovery. While not a scientific visualization, it channels the awe of that moment; two dense stellar remnants spiraling together and releasing an immense burst of light and matter. The golden explosion at the heart of the piece symbolizes both the literal birth of gold in the cosmos and the poetic transformation of violence into beauty.

A seamless loop generated by continuously zooming through a specific location in the Mandelbrot fractal. The loop is achieved by magnifying toward a dark region, then using that area as a matte to reveal an earlier segment of the same forward-zooming sequence. Although the Mandelbrot set is inherently non-repetitive, this technique creates the illusion of periodic motion within an infinite system.

Part of a series of kaleidoscopic tunnel loops made for VJ performances in October 2020

The GIF is compressed with GIFSKI at 100% quality. Optimized in 2025 from the original source file for high performance and small file size. it it less than 10MB making it perfect for sharing on the web, its natural environment. The framerate is calibrated to maximize the hypnotic effect.

A grid of rings animated over 180 frames through a size layer map driven by a diagonal solarized grey ramp cycle, subtly modulated by a procedural noise loop running over 3 cycles.

A static grid of dark circles sits beneath its duplicated TC Particular instance in which particles are scaled down by .5px, their color matched to the background (creating the illusion of rings), & emitter set to Classic Form, allowing particles to respond dynamically to the evolving layer map over time.

A system made of bars pairs which one of them remains in its initial form and the other transforms into a triangle that pushes the vertical scale of its paired bar. Pairs alternate direction making in sort the bar that transforms into a triangle is always opposing its neighbor. All sequences runs from a random frame within the loop making it generative over 270 frames.
