Nova Scotia’s Bay of Fundy boasts the highest tides in the world and an incredible striped bass fishery. We’re looking forward to sharing our time on the Stewiacke River with guide, Matt Szeto , as we navigate the tides to connect with an epic anadromous species.

It’s thought that there are two distinct populations of Striped Bass that run into the Stewiacke River here in Nova Scotia.

The early run is typically larger. The later run may be large or small, but are most often covered in sea lice and can fight like a fish 2-3 times their size. These stripers are pure fire!

It’s shocking to experience how quickly they will run you into your backing, and it’s not uncommon for them to come close to spooling you.

Moral of the story: If you’re swinging for stripes on the Stew, hang the heck on!

The Runner Up
—————————————————————🥈———
A unique Atlantic salmon pattern created by Cathy Colford-Mehlitz (Curtis Miramichi River Outfitters).

Cathy artfully designed this fly for a tying competition and was awarded ‘Runner Up’. Interestingly, she was inspired by a 19th century ghost story, The Dungarvon Whooper. This story is about an alleged murder in Central New Brunswick, that is said to have occurred along the banks of the Dungarvon River. The origin of this river are several lakes within the Miramichi Highlands.

The story is well known amongst residents within the surrounding community. Some of whom, still refrain from visiting certain areas on the Dungarvon, for fear of encountering the ‘Whooper’ itself.

This ghost story also inspired a song by Michael Whelan. And each aspect of Cathy’s fly, symbolizes different lyrics within this song. For instance, the fly’s forest green floss tag and white floss body, are meant to signify the forest and snow referenced in the song. While the silver and gold oval tinsel, represent the coins within the cook’s money belt.

See our story for the song’s full lyrics.

What a beautiful, artistic expression of local history and one heck of a productive salmon fly. 👌

“Those who contemplate the beauty of the earth find reserves of strength that will endure as long as life lasts. There is something infinitely healing in the repeated refrains of nature -- the assurance that dawn comes after night, and spring after winter.”

What an experience it was to fish Doctor’s Island on the Main Southwest Miramichi river this past Autumn. A beautiful section of the river and a special place, rich with history.

During my time Country Haven Lodge Miramichi I learned from owner, Byron Coughlan and guide, Jeremy Vickers, that the first doctor in Blackville was a William Idear. In the late 1700’s, he was apparently given a grant of 125 acres for the time he served in the British army. Dr. Idear then settled on a small island, now known as “Doctor’s Island”.

Interestingly, Dr. Idear grew a number of herbs to make his own medicines there. And in the mid to late 1900’s a botanist visited the island and found over 170 different kinds of herbs growing.

I must say that while fishing on Doctor’s Island, it was tough not to stray and explore to see what plants still remain today. But the epic fishing, on those memorable days in October, kept us more than captivated riverside.

It was really a unique feeling when I thought of the people that frequented this Island over the years. People such as Ted Williams, Joe DiMaggio and even, Marilyn Monroe, stayed on Doctor’s Island and fished these fabled waters. It’s difficult not to wonder who out-fished who and what flies were their favourites. What the salmon runs were like and what gear they might have used...

Fly fishing definitely takes us to some amazing places. And to some amazing stories and spectacular fish!
