Due to the impacts of the ongoing ice storm emergency in Kawartha Lakes, we’re expecting more organics food waste than usual tomorrow.

We ask that you continue to use your provided rollout cart. If your food/organics waste doesn’t fit in the cart, additional organics can be put in compostable bags in other containers during the increase period. If you are using extra containers and bringing them to the curb, please make sure they weigh 40 pounds or less for collector safety.

Reminder: remove all spoiled food from packaging before putting it in your organics rollout cart. If rollout carts have packaging in them, they will be left behind to protect the processing facility from contamination.

Residents in rural areas should continue to use their backyard composters and regular curbside garbage collection. The week of April 7 is now a double garbage collection week. To assist with spoiled food waste, you can put out two extra garbage bags for collection next week. Bags should not weigh more than 40 pounds.

Note: Next week there will be double garbage collection for organics program households as well. Please put spoiled food in with your organic waste (as outlined above), not in your additional garbage bags.

"Hydro has told us this is the worst storm Ontario has seen since 1998, and the damage is unlike anything they’ve dealt with in years.

Access issues and falling debris are still making things difficult in the hardest-hit areas, like many of our rural and norther communities in Kawartha Lakes.

Hydro has warned us that as cleanup continues, more hidden damage and new outages are likely to be discovered. Our roads operations are working to keep roads open so they can do their work.
We need access first, power back on, then cleanup."

Mayor Doug Elmslie

🚨 Significant Weather Event Declared – Freezing Rain in Kawartha Lakes ❄️🌧️
As of March 29, 2025, the City of Kawartha Lakes has declared the current freezing rain storm a Significant Weather Event due to icy roads and downed trees across the region.
🌲 Crews have been working hard all day and will be back at it tomorrow morning. However, fallen trees are making it difficult to reach some areas, and road conditions may not meet normal winter maintenance standards for now.
⚠️ Roads are expected to be ice-covered overnight, and freezing rain may continue into Sunday. Our operations team is out there with help from contractors and arborists to clear debris and restore access where possible.
Please stay off the roads unless travel is absolutely necessary — your safety and the safety of our crews is the top priority!
We’ll keep monitoring the situation and will let you know once conditions improve and service levels return to normal.

Stay safe out there, Kawartha Lakes 💙
