"Working Abroad Doesn’t Mean We’re Rich"

People think that when you’re working abroad, it’s all about money.
They assume you’re swimming in cash, living a luxurious life, and that every box is full of extra.

But the truth?

We work double. Sometimes even triple.
We miss birthdays, anniversaries, holidays, and even funerals.
We smile in photos, but deep inside, we’re tired physically, emotionally, and mentally.

Yes, we earn more than the minimum back home,
but the cost?
We sacrifice time with our family,
we eat alone,
we celebrate milestones through video calls,
and we cry ourselves to sleep when no one’s watching.

Every cent we send back home came from hours of standing, lifting, serving, cleaning, caring
and sometimes from enduring pain, loneliness, and disrespect.

So no, we’re not rich.
We’re responsible.
We’re doing what we have to do for our families.
And if you see us laughing or treating people when we’re home for vacation,
please know those moments are paid with years of work and sacrifices.

We don’t need pity.
We just hope people understand:
We didn’t go abroad to get rich.
We left home not for luxury but for survival.

Growing up in the Philippines, I used to think that anyone living in Canada was automatically rich. I mean, with 1 CAD being worth 40 pesos, how could they not be? But now that I’m actually here, I see the reality—and it’s nothing like what I imagined.

Yes, we earn in dollars—but we also spend in dollars. Rent, food, utilities, insurance… it all adds up fast. It’s not uncommon for people to work two or even three jobs just to stay afloat.

It breaks my heart when family or friends back home ask for help and I can’t say yes. Not because I don’t want to—but because I truly can’t. And I hope they understand that.

Living in the Canada. isn’t the glamorous life it’s made out to be. Sometimes, it’s just surviving—day by day, paycheck to paycheck. So if someone you love is here and can’t give, don’t take it as a lack of love. They might just be giving everything they have to stay afloat.

Ganun pa man, tuloy ang laban. I'm Filipino, I'm made for this. Laban lang mga kababayan. 🤟🏽🫶🏽🇵🇭🇨🇦💪🏽

Sipag, tyaga, puyat, sakripisyo, dugo't pawis. Daming pinasok na trababo. Wala pang 6 years nagbunga rin. Nakabili na kami ng bahay dito sa Canada. Wala talagang imposible pag nagtrabaho ka dito sa Canada. Opportunity is everywhere lalo pag okay ang papel mo. Maraming salamat Canada. 🥹🫰🏽🇨🇦
