NPP and NDC figures named in galamsey scandal – TUC calls for license revocations

Deputy General Secretary of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), Dr Kwabena Nyarko Otoo, has called for the immediate revocation of mining licenses held by politically exposed individuals involved in galamsey operations.

Speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express on October 13, Dr Otoo revealed that some politically connected figures from both the governing and opposition parties are deeply involved in illegal mining, also known as galamsey, and are profiting from the destruction of Ghana’s water bodies and forests.

He cited specific cases uncovered during a TUC fact-finding mission to assess the impact of galamsey on water treatment plants in parts of the Central and Eastern Regions.

“In Anum Apapam, we were told, somebody called Robert Lamptey, who has a license for small-scale mining in Anum Apapam and its environs, where he has a concession.

"What he does is that if I want to mine and acquire a land, I go and see him, and he covers me with his license, and I pay money to him. I pay about GH¢70,000 to him. And then every week, whatever I make from that galamsey activity, I give him about 30% of it,” Dr Otoo disclosed.

According to him, the problem extends beyond partisan lines, as politicians from both the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have been implicated in the illicit mining trade.

Adansi youth returns helicopter parts for their reward following Ashanti Regional Minister's plea

Significant parts of the August 6 military helicopter c,rash have been recovered, thanks to the community youth, the Ashanti Regional Minister, Hon. Dr. Frank Amoakohene, has confirmed.

“Thanks to the community youth. Significant parts of the craft and other belongings have been returned. Still expecting more by close of day,” he said on Facebook.

The ARCC is urging anyone still holding any parts — no matter how small — to return them immediately to local leaders or investigators. A cash reward is being offered for voluntary returns before Monday, August 11.

After that date, anyone keeping items will be treated as a criminal.

The recovered parts are expected to help investigators determine the cause of the crash that claimed eight lives, including top government officials.

Sam George gives DSTV August 7 deadline to cut prices or pack their bags and leave the country

Minister for Communication, Sam George, has warned that DSTV’s broadcasting license will be suspended from August 7, 2025, if the company fails to reduce subscription fees in line with the cedi’s recent appreciation.

Speaking during the Government Accountability Series, he said DSTV prices remain high despite a 30% cedi gain in the last five months.

“Ghanaians are demanding fairness,” he said, adding that most subscribers find DSTV content outdated except for Premier League football.

He urged Multichoice to drop prices permanently—not offer temporary promos.
