Happy Louis Riel Day!

Today, we honor the vision, courage, and leadership of Louis Riel, who fought for the rights of the MƩtis people and helped shape the province of Manitoba. His legacy of resilience and advocacy continues to inspire Indigenous communities across the land.

Let’s take this day to reflect, celebrate, and stand together in the spirit of unity and reconciliation.

Our deepest condolences to Chief Palson’s family, work family and community. What an incredibly tragic loss. You will be missed.
Rest in peace, Chief.

Chief of Police Doug Palson

With a heavy heart, the Manitoba First Nation Police Service shares the sudden and tragic news of a house fire that occurred earlier this morning at the residence of our Chief of Police Doug Palson.

Portage la Prairie RCMP and Fire quickly responded to the scene, and once the fire was extinguished, investigators discovered human remains in the home.

Although the investigation is on-going, we believe that Chief Palson was the victim of this tragic incident. Manitoba First Nation Police Service is working closely alongside the Manitoba RCMP, and the Office of the Fire Commissioner during this process.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Chief Palson’s family as they deal with this tragedy. We are also sharing in the grief and loss which is being felt by the members of the Manitoba First Nations Police Service. We are all connected as a united police family at this time. Chief Palson was a passionate leader who loved our police service and its members who serve our 10 First Nation communities with pride and respect.

On behalf of the Dakota Ojibway Tribal Council Police Commission, I would like to express our heartfelt sadness for the loss of Chief Palson to his family, friends, and colleagues. The days ahead will be challenging, but we will come together to support each other.

Sherri Thomas
Chair – Dakota Ojibway Tribal Council Police Commission

What great opportunities to bridge employment gaps with Indigenous youth!!!

Great job Assiniboine Community College

In the fall of 2023, two employment readiness programs run by Continuing Studies at Assiniboine Community College achieved significant success, concluding in the first week of December:

• The six-week initiative, STRIVE, was held in Dauphin at the Parkland Campus in collaboration with Workforce Training and Employment.
• The 11-week program, YESS, supported by the Government of Canada and catered to youth ages 15-30, was held in both Sioux Valley and Ebb & Flow First Nations.

These programs provide essential workplace training, job skills, and certifications such as food safety and first aid, along with important communication and job readiness training.

It is worth noting that both programs are tuition-free, and a total of 28 students took advantage of the opportunity, receiving valuable training and workplace experience to help them prepare for their future endeavors. The ultimate goal of these programs is to help students achieve meaningful full-time employment or return to school for further education. Additionally, these collaborative efforts and partnerships between the community and the program exemplify Continuing Studies' commitment to bridging the gap between education, community, and employers.

If you are a student looking for more information about either program or an employer interested in future student placements, please contact the program coordinator Michelle Budiwski at [email protected]. You will be provided with all the necessary details you need to take advantage of these amazing opportunities.
