At 8:42 AM, responded to reports of a brush fire on Bissett Road in Cole Harbour.

Our members arrived quickly and were able to contain the fire before it spread further.

This is a good reminder that the fire ban remains in place. Conditions are extremely dry and the risk of wildfire is still high.

🔥 Halifax Professional Fire Fighters can no longer remain silent.

From wildfire preparedness to staffing, from equipment failures to workplace culture, the problems within HRFE leadership are widespread and deeply concerning.

Two years after the Tantallon wildfire destroyed 151 homes, we still see no meaningful improvements in protocols, surge staffing, or protective equipment. At the same time, management has targeted our members simply for speaking out and standing up for their colleagues.

Chief Ken Stuebing and the current Fire Management Group have lost the trust of the fire fighters who serve HRM. Our members — and the citizens we protect — deserve leadership that puts public safety and professional integrity ahead of optics.

These issues need to be fixed sooner than later our firefighters deserve better and the staffing of trucks needs to be addressed as well. Halifax Fire's top brass needs to do better and staff these trucks that only have two firefighters on them.

While the Long Lake wildfires battle continues, DNR and local crews have been responding to other wildfires all around the province. In the past 4 days alone, DNR crews have been dispatched 17 times. There have only been a few days in the past month when crews were not dispatched. In many cases, a helicopter was also sent to investigate and/or drop water. Some fires grew out of control before being suppressed. That reflects how incredibly dry the conditions are right now – and yesterday’s rain was not enough. Our crews are working hard and fast to prevent more large, out of control wildfires. And we need your help. Stay out of the woods. Respect the provincewide burn ban.

Special Air Quality Statement:

Smoke from West Dalhousie Forest Fire

Locations: Halifax, Lunenburg, Kings, and Hants Counties

Short range wind forecast: Winds light westerly becoming southwesterly 20 km/h gusting to 40 this morning.

Smoke from a wildfire near the Long Lake area of Annapolis county will reduce air quality downwind. Smoke conditions may vary locally as wind and fire behaviour changes. Air quality is already being reduced in Lunenburg County with reductions expected in some parts of Halifax County this morning before the smoke plumes settles into Kings and Hants Counties this afternoon following the anticipated wind shift.

People more likely to be impacted by wildfire smoke, including people aged 65 and older, pregnant people, infants and young children, people with an existing illness or chronic health condition, and people who work outdoors, should avoid strenuous activities outdoors and seek medical attention if experiencing symptoms.

As smoke levels increase, health risks increase.

Limit time outdoors. Consider reducing or rescheduling outdoor sports, activities and events.

You may experience mild and common symptoms such as eye, nose and throat irritation, headaches or a mild cough. More serious but less common symptoms include wheezing, chest pains or severe cough. If you think you are having a medical emergency, seek immediate medical assistance.

Visit http://www.airhealth.ca for information on how to reduce your health risk and your personal contribution to pollution levels, as well as for current and forecast AQHi values.
Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada.

Recommended Action:
When indoors, keep windows and doors closed as much as possible. When there is an extreme heat event occurring with poor air quality, prioritize keeping cool.

When indoors, keep windows and doors closed as much as possible. When there is an extreme heat event occurring with poor air quality, prioritize keeping cool.

Protect your indoor air from wildfire smoke.
Actions can include using a clean, good quality air filter in your ventilation system and/or a certified portable air cleaner that can filter fine particles.

If you must spend time outdoors, a well-constructed, well-fitting and properly worn respirator type mask (such as a NIOSH-certified N95 or equivalent respirator) can reduce your exposure to the fine particles in the smoke. Even though exposure may be reduced, there can still be risks to health.

Check in on others who are in your care or live nearby who may be more likely to be impacted by outdoor air pollution.

Always follow guidance from local authorities.

The Long Lake wildfires complex is still out of control and now estimated at 8026 hectares. The fire has advanced along both sides of Paradise Lake. Assessment of yesterday’s damage i While the rain was welcome, it was not enough to make a real difference. It bought some time for crews to make progress, but it will take days of steady rain to help get the wildfires complex under control is ongoing. Beyond that, no new reports of damage to homes. Same ground resources are on the scene. Weather prevented planes from flying but 6 helicopters have been working on the fire. Heavy equipment operators resumed building dozer guards
