Such sad news hearing about the sudden loss of Warren Rutherford. I had the pleasure to sit beside Warren at many conferences and conventions and always admired his straightforward no-nonsense approach. We extended our condolences to all of his family and his musical family for this loss. You will be missed.

Warren Jay Rutherford Obituary
(January 22, 1960-October 30, 2025)
Sadly and unexpectedly, Warren Jay Rutherford passed away on October 30, 2025. Born on January 22, 1960, he was a dedicated son to Eleanor and Andrew Rutherford, who have predeceased him. Warren is survived by his sister, Dawn, nephew Adam and niece Paris. He was a much-cherished brother and beloved uncle.
In his youth Warren was a talented athlete, playing hockey, baseball and football. He remained an avid sports fan.
His academic career culminated in attaining a PhD in philosophy.
Warren's passions and interests were wide and varied. An aficionado of all things boxing, he was the only Canadian with a yearly vote on the inductees to the Boxing Hall of Fame. He attended the induction ceremony in Canastota, N.Y., on several occasions.
He was also incredibly knowledgeable about fine wine and scotch. He relished the perfect pairing with food to be enjoyed. A constant theme throughout his life was his love of music. An accomplished musician, primarily himself playing pedal steel guitar, banjo and harmonica. He had an incredible respect for all live performers.
The last chapter of his life led him to the role of Secretary/Treasurer of the Musicians' Union, Local 553. Here he worked endlessly advocating for all those he represented.
Most of all he was a true friend. He was quietly supportive and always made the effort to keep in touch with those he held close. Warren will be sorely missed by family and friends alike.
Gone too soon. We love you.
Sincere thank-you to everyone who posted stories and tributes on Instagram and Facebook. A celebration of life will take place in early June of 2026. See you there.

As performers and artists we and our country need to realize that we are small businesses and deserve a seat at the table. It doesn’t matter if you’re a weekend warrior playing clubs and pubs in your neighbourhood or touring across the country. You have a business whether you think you do or don’t. The minute you take any money from an employer, you have and are a business. The choice is upon yourself if you want to keep doing what you’re doing or not.

To have a voice for arts and culture in our Federal Government is important and only true artists understand the roadblocks and obstacles we face. Newly elected David Myles MP may be that voice we are looking for. Not only does David have a working knowledge of the music industry, he also knows the inner workings of the industry as well.

David is currently sitting in the Heritage Committee discussing the implications and challenges AI is having on arts and culture and how we can navigate the road ahead.

We truly hope that David will be a dedicated advocate for the arts in Canada.

We congratulate David in his new roll of being a Member of Parliament.

Established in 1924 The Upper Canada Musicians’ Association was chartered to represent professional musicians from Lanark, Leeds and Grenville to Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry Counties.
