Holland America Line is moving Oosterdam’s major renovation forward by five weeks — and that means changes for passengers already booked in late 2027.

Several previously scheduled cruises have been canceled, while five new post-renovation sailings are being added across the Mediterranean, Atlantic and Caribbean.

Oosterdam will now return to service October 31 with new stateroom and suite categories, the Grand Dutch Café, a redesigned Ocean Bar and other changes.

The history of passenger shipping is rarely a straight line. A celebrated ocean liner can become a cruise ship. A passenger vessel can become a hotel. A famous transatlantic liner can end its life stranded on a remote shoreline.

In his latest Heard Along the Promenade Deck column, maritime historian Bill Miller revisits several remarkable examples. Among them are Bremen, the former Blue Riband holder; France, later transformed into Norway; the French liner Ancerville, which survives today in an entirely different role; and the extraordinary story of America/Australis, whose final voyage ended off the Canary Islands.

Miller also looks back 70 years to Grace Kelly’s voyage aboard Constitution to Monaco ahead of her marriage to Prince Rainier III.

It is a fascinating reminder that ships often have lives every bit as complicated as the people who sail aboard them.

Daniela Garavello has been promoted to staff captain aboard Carnival Adventure, becoming the first woman in Carnival Cruise Line’s history to hold the position.

It’s a milestone worth celebrating. But Joe's Daily had a thought when he saw the news: Why did it take until 2026?
