WARNING : Long post ahead. Squeamish alert ⚠
I'm lucky for having to write this.
But Bad luck found me last Saturday June 3, 2023 .
Descending on Highwood Pass (highest paved highway in Canada) at high rate of speed, when this two cyclists who were trying to avoid a bear, went over the yellow line and on to the opposite lane and towards my path which I wasn't able to avoid. BANG! In a split second, there I was sprawled on the rough concrete floor.
I hit the ground pretty hard and I didn't get up right away. I got the wind knocked out of me and I knew I had some damage on my body.
Except for the big laceration on my left arm, I have no idea on how severe the injury was because adrenaline was for sure still is flowing. I'm in no pain. My damaged helmet says otherwise , but I was lucid; It felt like I just took a right hook from Manny Pacquiao. but the helmet did served its purpose... Thank you .. And one thing is for sure, I will need a new helmet, soon wink wink.
My Padjakeros cycling family was quick to my side, making sure I'm awake, talking to me. And With the bear currently present, so as the Parks Canada rangers. Melanie (I hope I remember it right) was there immediately ", she was there beside me,comforting and doing all the necessary stuff. She contacted the EMS and fire fighters available. Which were swift to arrive.
Long story short I was on an ambulance on my way to the Foothills Hospital in Calgary. EMS Ranya and CJ looks like took me on a joyride instead of an emergency. They were glorious to be with(they both love our peach mango pie and lechon) . And they said I'm an ok patient too Hahaha. Pumping in morphine dose after dose Telling stories that made us look like long time friends instead of EMS to patient kinda relationship.
One broken collar bone and four cracked ribs after.
There's a lot of sub stories to tell. Of my journey from asphalt to ambulance to abode.
One common denominator here is" PEOPLE "
People around me worked in harmony to help. From friends, to park rangers, to fire fighters, to cycling doctors who voluntarily stopped by to help,to EMS personnel, to nurses, to doctors and of course to family.. I just want to say THANK YOU to everyone who responded and continue to provide words of encouragement, small notes that help a damn lot . I owe you lots. I love you guys 🙏🙏🙏 I'll be back, the soonest.
I won't be logging kilometres from here on end. So bear with my recycled post for sure.
