China has launched its own HarmonyOS to compete with Microsoft Windows.
China’s Alternatives to Windows: Homegrown Operating Systems for Technological Independence
China is working to create alternatives to Microsoft's Windows operating system. This effort is part of a larger national strategy focused on achieving self-sufficiency in technology and improving cybersecurity. The need for this initiative has grown due to increasing geopolitical tensions and the potential threat of technology sanctions from the United States.
Let’s look at some important operating systems being developed in China to reduce reliance on Windows, especially in the government, military, and business sectors:
1. Hongmeng OS, developed by Huawei
Developer: Huawei
Initial Release: 2019
Kernel Type: Microkernel architecture
Original Target: IoT and smartphones
Expanded Target: Tablets, televisions, smartwatches, and now personal computers
Latest Version: HarmonyOS NEXT, a native ecosystem independent of Android
Objective: To create a self-sufficient ecosystem that avoids U.S. technology and does not use Google services
PC Version: Currently under development; not yet available to consumers
Note: HarmonyOS NEXT will not support Android APKs, marking Huawei’s move toward a fully native application ecosystem.
2. Kylin OS Series
Various Variants
Government Policies and Directives
“3-5-2 Replacement Plan”
Objective: To replace foreign hardware and software like Windows and Intel in sensitive areas.
Barriers to Adoption
Application Ecosystem: Many legacy applications still rely on Windows.
Hardware Compatibility: Support for drivers and firmware is still limited.
User Base Resistance: Companies often hesitate due to the costs of retraining and transitioning software.
Gaming and other sectors are also evolving as China moves towards its technological independence.
