This week’s Calgary Arts Development grant announcements remind us that the artistic journey is full of both triumphs and trials. Whether you received a grant or not, remember this: true greatness isn’t determined by committees or awards. It’s forged through passion, perseverance, and dedication. 🌟
Take Leonard Cohen, for example. Cohen’s journey to success wasn’t immediate. His debut album, Songs of Leonard Cohen, was released in 1967, but it didn’t make a significant impact right away. He faced numerous rejections and struggled to find his audience. It wasn’t until his second album, Songs from a Room, in 1969—when Cohen was 33 years old—that he began to see substantial success.
Consider also B.B. King, whose rise to fame was marked by significant struggle. Born in 1925, King spent years working as a sharecropper and playing in small clubs before his breakthrough. Despite his talent, he faced considerable obstacles, including financial hardship and limited opportunities. It wasn’t until he was in his early 40s, around the mid-1960s, that B.B. King achieved widespread recognition with hits like “The Thrill Is Gone.” Now imagine if B.B. had given up! 🎤🎸
And then there is one of our favourites, Charles Bradley, who was discovered by the Daptone Records label in his early 60s. Bradley’s debut album, No Time for Dreaming, was released in 2011, when he was 62 years old. His powerful voice and emotional performances resonated deeply with audiences, proving that remarkable achievements can come later in life. 🌟
