While spending my 30 minutes a day connecting with others on Instagram, I find that many people do not seem to know how to start a conversation. Posting emojis or a two or a three word comment is not going to help you grow your social media.

First of all, let me say that there any many ways to engage your audience. You may also have some ideas that I have not even thought of.

One of the biggest pieces of advice that I can give you is to simply start a conversation. Talk to your audience as if you are talking to a friend who is right in front of you. After all, that’s what you are trying to do - make friends on your social media platforms.

When you are looking for ways to interact with your followers you might want to try:

1) Ending your posts with a question
2) Direct message (DMs) to build the friendship. DO NOT ask your audience to follow you or buy your product or service until you have established a great connection with them
3) Use stories,reels and lives to share information about content and yourself
4) Write a meaningful comment that shows you have read their post.
5) Engage with your followers
6) Engage in your previous posts
7)Engage with people you follow

I want to reiterate that you are having a conversation with these people. You need to add in your personality and do what feels right for you. Everyone is on their own business journey but you need to look at where you are and what works for you.

SHOULD YOU JUST POST REELS?

For the longest time, we were encouraged to post reels and more reels. However, Adam Mosseri, CEO of Instagram, recently reminded us to use a variety of content formats on Instagram. He suggested that we still post reels but mix them up with a variety of other formats (carousels, single posts, stories).

Your audience is composed of many different individuals who have different likes. Some prefer reels, some prefer carousels and some prefer single posts, etc. As content creators, we need to appeal to all of the people in our audience by using a variety of formats. This also makes our posts more exciting and helps keep our audience engaged.

Remember: Not only do you want to create content that appeals to your audience but you also want to attract the right people to your community.

Write the word “variety” in the comments if you agree.

You will hear so many different strategies on what to do on social media that it is important for you to realize what works best for you. Determine what your business goals are, what skills you have, who is your target audience and how much time do you have. I know that I just posted my very AMBITIOUS Strategy got growth but here is a simple plan for someone who is starting out on social media or who does not have a lot of time to spend on social media.

Post one time per day talking about one thing.

It is so important that you do not get overwhelmed or burn yourself out. Once you have masted that then you can increase your plan where necessary.

Try this for 90 days and keep track of your results.

For many’s of you it probably looks like I’d disappeared off the face of the earth. Back in the middle of May, my Facebook and Instagram account got hacked. I’ve just got my Instagram account back and I’m still working on my facebook account.

Thank you for your patience and for sticking around. I’m looking forward to connecting with you again on a regular basis and sharing tips on how to grow your social media.

Lesson Learned: Make sure your turn on your 2-factor authorization with alerts being sent to your phone instead of your email.

Share this because it will change how people think about creating content.

It’s taken me three years but I’ve finally realized what was one of the biggest mistakes I was making on social media. I was posting mostly educational content on my feed but very little personal content. As a past classroom teacher, I was used to teaching so I spent hours creating educational content. I had been told to keep personal content off my feed! Others were growing but I was barely moving!

After a lot of research, I’ve discovered that the businesses and creators who were meeting with the most success were sharing their thoughts, giving their opinions, and making recommendations on what they like. They were letting their audiences get to know them better and socializing at the same time!

Since I’ve started sharing more of my own thoughts and opinions, I’m getting more new followers in a week than I did before and I’ve been more successful in engaging with my audience. I’m not getting 100s of comments with every post but I’m doing way better than I did before. (I keep reminding myself that a small gain is better than no gain!)

Should you stop posting educational content! Not at all! Just be sure to add some personal content to your feed to add to the mix!

Have you seen the movie, “On the Basis of Sex” about Ruth Bader Ginsburg? It is available on Netflix and shows her early years when she was a young mother and a new attorney struggling to fight for women’s rights and gender equality. What an inspiring movie!

Ruth Bader Ginsburg earned a great deal of respect throughout her life from her colleagues and the American public. She is a great example of a woman who had strong beliefs and fought a lot of adversity and obstacles in her attempts to meet her goals. What a wonderful example to women who want to be a success in their business and their life. If you are getting overwhelmed with facing obstacles in your business, you need to watch this movie! 👏🏻
