The $6.4-billion Gordie Howe International Bridge will open on July 27, but Ottawa is facing growing pressure to reveal the full terms of the agreement reached with the United States.

Under the original 2012 arrangement, Canada—after financing the bridge and related infrastructure—was expected to collect tolls and recover its construction costs before sharing revenue with Michigan. The new agreement introduces a 15-year regional economic development fund, funded through half of the bridge’s net profits.

Prime Minister Mark Carney says Canada will first collect revenue, service the bridge’s costs and repay its debt before any remaining profits are divided.

“We are sharing after Canada is paid back,” he said. “The initial years of this bridge… there’s not going to be a lot of net to split. So look, it’s a good deal for Canada.”

The Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority will also seek U.S. agreement for certain toll changes, reportedly including increases above 10 per cent or reductions below regional averages. However, officials have not explained exactly how net profits will be calculated, how the fund will operate or whether previously announced toll rates will change.

Conservative MP Harb Gill says Windsor residents deserve a full accounting.

“Whenever there’s an absence of information, people start making up their own theories,” he said. “I’d rather get a proper accounting from them to say this is what we agreed to… what we got in return and what we gave up.”

The bridge may finally be opening, but the most important question remains unanswered: Was this a sensible cross-border compromise—or did Canada surrender too much influence over an infrastructure project it financed?

What began as a night of music and dancing at Salsa on St. Clair ended in panic, grief and a crime scene in the heart of Toronto.

Shortly after 8 p.m. on Saturday, gunfire erupted at the festival, leaving two men dead and sending four others to hospital with gunshot wounds. Police have made no arrests and are still working to determine how many people were involved and whether any suspects remain outstanding.

Residents described “a sea of people” fleeing into nearby streets. Lindsey Petrus said neighbours handed out water, offered phones and helped people injured in the rush, including two teenage girls who had been trampled.

“One girl was calling her mom just crying, saying, ‘Mommy, I want to go home.’ It was unlike anything I’ve ever seen in my life,” Petrus said.

By Sunday, St. Clair Avenue West was silent — covered in police tape, evidence markers, abandoned food and even lost slippers. The second day of the festival was cancelled.

Local shop owner Angela Mazza said the shooting had “crushed” the community’s sense of safety.

“We just don’t feel protected,” she said, questioning whether the festival should return next year.

Councillor Josh Matlow urged the city not to let fear win, saying: “I don’t believe that we should just be shutting down a free society and the happiness of our lives because these criminals have done what they’ve done.”

The tragedy now leaves Toronto facing a difficult question: Should major public festivals continue with stronger security, or has this shooting changed what people are willing to risk for community celebrations?

🚨 BREAKING: Two people are dead and three others injured following a shooting at Toronto’s Salsa on St. Clair festival.

Police were called to the area of St. Clair Avenue West and Arlington Avenue at approximately 8:12 p.m. The shooter remains outstanding as officers continue searching the area.

“Please avoid the area immediately,” Toronto police warned in a social media post.

The TTC says Line 1 subway trains are currently not stopping at St. Clair West station because of a “security incident”.

Details about the victims, their conditions and the suspect have not yet been released. This remains a developing story.

The Amber Alert for 6-year-old Lanakai Morrison has been cancelled, but the search continues as RCMP investigate his disappearance and the whereabouts of three other people.

Lanakai was reported missing from Valhalla Centre near Beaverlodge, Alberta, on July 7, and police believe he was abducted by his mother, Krista Morrison. A reported sighting placed Lanakai in Fort St. John, B.C., on July 8.

RCMP say the original vehicle linked to the alert — a 2015 black Toyota Tundra with Alberta licence plate CTN6517 — has since been found. Police now believe the group may be travelling in a 2006 red Ford F-350 pickup with Alberta licence plate CXW8820.

Lanakai’s mother Krista Morrison, her partner Daniel Ludwig, and another child, 4-year-old Karl Morrison, remain missing.

Lanakai is described as 6 years old, Caucasian, with a slight build, long light brown hair and brown eyes.

RCMP said the Amber Alert was cancelled because “there is no reasonable expectation the public in Alberta will be able to action the instructions in the alert”, but stressed that the investigation remains active.

Anyone with information about their location is urged to call 911, Beaverlodge RCMP at 780-354-2955, or local police immediately.
