When people hear I came back to radio after 15+ years in digital, they usually ask:
“Does radio even work anymore?”

Short answer: yes.
Long answer: make your message stronger than your math.

One of my favourite chapters from Roy Williams’ Wizard of Ads is “Dead Cows Everywhere,” where he takes aim at three “sacred cows”:

Demographics
Gross rating points
Media mix

You can hit the right demo, stack up beautiful rating points, and sprinkle your budget across every platform…
…and still lose.

Why? Because you can’t spreadsheet your way out of a weak message.

If your ad is boring, confusing, or forgettable, you’re just paying to repeat a bad story.
When planning campaigns (radio or digital), the order of operations is simple:

Story first
Strategy second
Schedules and placements last

If the message isn’t worth hearing 50 times, it doesn't matter how “efficient” the schedule looks on paper.

When I was little, my brother and I used to hide in a cupboard on Christmas Eve, holding our breath and listening for sleigh bells, absolutely convinced we’d finally catch Santa in the act.

We never did.

Years later, when my brother broke the news that Santa wasn’t real, my mom quietly handed me a book about someone else: St. Nicholas. A man in a brown wool coat who walked through winter nights leaving toys, coal, and kindness at strangers’ doors.

That story has stayed with me for fifty years.

And today is St. Nicholas’ Day, the feast day of the man who eventually turned into “Santa Claus.

Have you ever set up a “helpful” tool… and then realized you don’t actually know what it’s doing in your name?

Lately I’ve been thinking about Disney’s Sorcerer’s Apprentice — the enchanted broom that just keeps hauling water long after the apprentice has lost control.

That’s what AI and automation can feel like in our businesses if we’re not paying attention.

I’ve been building AI assistants to reply to emails, social media comments, and Google reviews. They’re fast, helpful, and (mostly) sound like me. I even have an AI VA named Jennifer — you can chat with her, but she always passes messages back to me so a real human stays in the loop.
