September 11 - a day of sadness and remembrance since 2001.

I remember that morning vividly.

I was living in Chicago, and my roommate William called me into the living room.

“Alex - come quick! You need to see this.”

I looked at the TV and saw the first tower on fire. It had been struck by a plane.

As we watched the news, suddenly a second plane came into view and crashed into the other tower.

We both screamed, then looked at each other in shock.
“This can’t be an accident.”

What followed was a horrific day for America and for people around the world.

I had friends and family in New York, and thankfully none of them were hurt. My cousin was supposed to work in the towers that day but had called in sick. She was one of the lucky ones.

Later that day, as planes were grounded and we slowly began to understand the magnitude of what had happened, William and I heard something outside our building in Wicker Park.

People were singing and playing drums.

We grabbed our drums and went outside to join them.

Dozens of people had gathered in a huge drum circle - singing, playing, mourning and simply being together.

I will never forget that moment.

Amid so much horror and sadness, I had never felt such a sense of connection and love for my country. People came together - not just across America, but from around the world - to mourn, support one another and help in any way they could.
25 years later, our world can sometimes feel more divided than united.
I hope we can find our way back to that sense of “we’re all in this together” - and that it doesn’t take another tragedy to remind us.

Love and light to those who lost their lives that day, their families, the first responders, and everyone whose life was forever changed by September 11.

It was the mid-1940s, shortly after World War II.
My Grandma and Grandpa Rennie, along with my father who was just a young boy at the time - moved from Chicago to Missouri and opened a small diner called the Anchor Café.

One day, a tired truck driver came in for a meal. Almost immediately, everyone else in the diner stood up and walked out.

Confused, my grandmother asked what had happened.

"It's me, Ma'am," he said. "They're leaving because I'm Black."

Without missing a beat, Grandma replied, "Well that's B.S.! Your money's just as good as anyone else's."

Concerned he might hurt their business, the truck driver offered to leave and never come back.

My grandmother wouldn't hear of it.

Instead, she set up a picnic table behind the diner where the staff took their breaks and served him there. Before long, he became a regular, sharing meals and conversation with my grandparents and the workers.

I've always been proud of that story.

Juneteenth is a reminder not only of a pivotal moment in history, but also that real change often begins with ordinary people choosing to treat others with dignity and respect.

We've made progress, but there’s still so much work to do.

Every act of kindness, fairness, and courage moves us a little further in the right direction.

Happy Juneteenth.

Years ago, I moved to the coast to learn how to surf.

It’s the most spiritual experience I’ve ever had - from dolphins and whales to countless other marine species, the ocean has a way of reminding us how connected we all are.

On World Oceans Day, let's celebrate and protect the blue heart of our planet.

Today is World Art Day – (April 15th honoring the birthday of Leonardo da Vinci), and I’m excited to share this with you. I’ve told this story before – it’s one of my favourite pieces that I drew just for fun.

It was originally a pencil rendering, and I was happy with it. I was building up my portfolio for inclusion in The Directory of Illustration, and the agent there convinced me that I needed to take it further and colorize it.

I didn’t agree with her at first, but the more I started working with it, the more fun I was having. It was meant to be a night scene, and the original didn’t convey that at all. She was right, and the piece became something so much more.

Sometimes we need to get out of our own way.

I’m proud to say that I’ve joined with the Directory again this year (my third time), and am looking forward to pushing my creativity further once again.

To close out Black History Month I wanted to honour some of my heroes in my lifetime (believe me, there were many more I could have included). Barack Obama - history maker who led with diplomacy and class, Viola Davis - one of the finest actors of my generation, Serena Williams - the greatest in her sport, Pernell Whitaker - ranked the #10 greatest boxer in history, Kamala Harris - history maker breaking both the color and gender barriers as our Vice-President, Morgan Freeman - a genuine class act and teacher, Prince - considered one of the greatest musicians of all-time, and Jasmine Crockett - a no-nonsense member of the House who fights for what is right. Thank you all.
