Confidence Is Built Through Contribution

We talk about confidence as though it's something we need to find before we can begin. Get clear enough, feel ready enough, believe in yourself enough, and then you'll finally put yourself out there.

I think we have that backwards.

Confidence is rarely the prerequisite. It's the result.

Every time you use what you know to help someone solve a problem, make a decision, avoid a mistake or see something differently, you get evidence that your experience has value.

That's particularly important when you're reinventing yourself later in life. You can have decades of expertise and still feel like a beginner when you're stepping into a new chapter. Waiting until you feel completely confident can keep you waiting for a very long time.

Instead, start contributing.

Answer the question. Share the idea. Help the person. Offer your perspective. Take what you've learned over 30 or 40 years and put it to work somewhere useful.

Stop waiting to feel valuable. Use your value, and let confidence catch up.

What's one thing you know you could help someone with today, even if you're not quite ready to call yourself an expert?

How many times have you known something was wrong in your business... then talked yourself out of trusting what you knew?

You call it being logical. Being responsible. Getting more information. But sometimes you’re just ignoring the answer you already have.

In this episode, Ange de Lumiere joins us to unpack why experienced entrepreneurs override their intuition, and how learning to trust it can change the way you make decisions, choose opportunities and run your business.

What's One Lesson Life Taught You That Someone Would Happily Pay to Learn?

We tend to think expertise comes from qualifications, job titles and the letters after our names. But some of the most valuable things we know came from figuring something out the hard way.

Maybe you learned how to lead people through change, rebuild after a career setback, navigate a difficult negotiation, create order from chaos, sell without feeling sleazy, or make a major transition when the old version of your life no longer fit.

You've probably lived with that knowledge for so long that it doesn't feel particularly remarkable anymore. That's the danger of experience. What feels obvious to you may be incredibly valuable to someone who hasn't learned it yet.

So here's a little challenge for today. Identify one lesson life or work taught you that took years to learn, then ask yourself who is struggling with that problem right now.

Could you teach it? Advise someone about it? Build a service around it? Turn it into a workshop, consulting offer, book, course or business?

You don't necessarily need another brilliant business idea. You may already know something worth building one around.

So, what's one lesson you've learned that someone else would happily pay to learn faster?

Share yours below. I suspect there's a lot more expertise hiding in this comment section than most of us realize.

Tomorrow, a group of us are getting together to ask one deceptively simple question: What’s next?

Not what should you do. Not what your family expects. Not what society thinks someone your age is supposed to want. What do YOU want this next chapter to look like?

If you’re 55+ and you haven’t completely figured that out yet, join us tomorrow for the Reinvention Roundtable. We’ll spend 90 minutes having a real conversation about purpose, possibilities, income, contribution and what could still be ahead.

No sales pitch. No pretending we’ve got everything figured out. Just good humans having the kind of conversation that can change what you see as possible.

📍 IN PERSON: 2836 Memorial Dr, Calgary, AB T2A 6L6
💻 LIVE ONLINE: Via Zoom — link provided after registration

There’s still room at the table.

What are you going to do with the next 20 years?

We spend decades planning financially for retirement. We calculate pensions, investments and how much we’ll need to live on.

But we spend remarkably little time asking what we actually want those years to be ABOUT.

At 55, 60 or 65, you may have another 20 or 30 years ahead of you.

That isn’t an epilogue. It’s a whole damn chapter.

Maybe you want to build something. Travel. Consult. Teach. Start a business. Make a difference. Earn differently. Or combine several of those things into a life that doesn’t fit neatly into the old “work or retire” boxes.

You don’t need the whole thing mapped out today.

But perhaps it’s time to start asking better questions.

That’s what Clarity Compass is for.
