New Zealand just announced plans to eradicate feral cats.
New Zealand has officially declared feral cats a target in its ambitious Predator Free 2050 initiative, aiming to eliminate species that devastate native ecosystems.
Until now, cats were excluded from the list, but following a surge in ecological damage—including the killing of over 100 endangered short-tailed bats in a single week—officials have drawn a hard line. Feral cats, which live and hunt without human care, have also driven the southern dotterel to near extinction and spread toxoplasmosis, a parasite affecting both marine life and livestock.
The government’s plan includes toxin-laced baits and automated traps, raising ethical concerns from animal rights advocates.
However, public support is strong, with over 90% of submissions during national consultations favoring tougher measures. Officials stress that this effort targets only feral cats—not pets—and continue to promote responsible ownership through desexing, microchipping, and keeping domestic cats indoors. As New Zealand ramps up efforts to protect its unique wildlife, the move positions the country at the forefront of a difficult but increasingly urgent conservation battle.
