Banff may be busier than normal this week, mainly due to international media based at the Banff Centre to cover the G7 Leaders’ Summit, 50 kilometres away in Kananaskis.
The RCMP-led Integrated Safety & Security Group (ISSG) has designated a demonstration zone in the parking lot of the Fenlands Banff Recreation Centre on Monday, June 16, and Tuesday, June 17, to safely facilitate demonstrators who wish to convey messages to G7 leaders and international media.
The recreation centre will be closed to the public on those two days. The Fenlands parking lot will be closed to vehicles for the safety of demonstrators.
With the parking lot closed on Monday and Tuesday, visitors will be unable to park at the Fenlands and walk across Norquay Road to the Banff entrance sign for photographs.
In order to avoid illegal parking on Norquay Road, which adds to traffic congestion and safety risks, the Town of Banff is TEMPORARILY removing the Banff sign on Friday, June 13, and re-installing it next week after the G7. (The sign is scheduled to be PERMANENTLY moved from Norquay Road to land near the entrance to the Train Station Parking Lot in the fall.)
As normal, vehicle parking on Norquay Road beside the Fenlands is NOT permitted. This includes media, tourists and residents. People wanting to go to the site can park at the free Train Station Parking Lot and walk or cycle the 700 metres.
The Town of Banff municipality is not involved in any aspects of the G7 or the demonstration zone or security in town during G7.
If you have questions about the demonstration zone or security, please visit the RCMP website at https://rcmp.ca/en/g7 or phone 1-833-341-4544 or email [email protected]
