Over the past year, municipal leaders from across Canada have been raising their voices, calling on the federal government to take stronger action on public safety — and in particular, to make changes to Canada’s bail system.

On October 23rd, following months of consultation with provinces, territories, law enforcement, and community groups, the Government of Canada introduced new legislation aimed at tightening bail and sentencing laws. We sat down with Winnipeg Mayor Scott Gillingham, who recently travelled to Ottawa to advocate for bail reform, to get his thoughts on the federal government’s new legislation — and to ask whether he believes these changes will make a real difference on the ground.

Earlier this week, we spoke with FCM Big City Mayors’ Caucus Vice-Chair and Winnipeg Mayor Scott Gillingham about Alberta’s municipal election — including working with incoming mayors Jeromy Farkas and Andrew Knack, and reflecting on his time collaborating with outgoing mayors Jyoti Gondek and Amarjeet Sohi.

The ballots are counted, the signs are coming down, and across Alberta, the dust is finally starting to settle.

It’s been only a few days since voters went to the polls in the municipal elections — shaping the councils and county boards that will guide their communities for the next four years. While some familiar faces will be returning to their seats, a new wave of leaders is also stepping into local government for the first time.

To get a sense of the mood — and the message rural leaders are hoping to bring to Edmonton for Convention next month— we sat down with Rural Municipalities of Alberta President Kara Westerlund.
