In this video, I take you along for the ride as I travel by bus and bush taxi between two of West Africa's English-speaking capital cities, and show you every step to take along the way if you're travelling overland on the intense ride from Freetown, Sierra Leone to Monrovia, Liberia.

Covering a distance of 515 km over the course of roughly 12 hours, I leave Freetown bright and early on the first bus out of the capital and head east across Sierra Leone to its second-largest city of Bo. From there, I squeeze into a shared bush taxi for the two-hour ride to the Jendema border crossing with Liberia, then enter the "USA of Africa", inching my way closer to the southwesternmost point of West Africa. A few hours later, I arrived in Monrovia, where I realize just how expensive Liberia can be due to its use of the US Dollar, and prepare to explore the Liberian capital (next video!).

Would you undertake the overland journey between Sierra Leone and Liberia? If not, what holds you back? Let me know in the comments!

Nestled in the southwestern corner of West Africa along the Atlantic coast lies Freetown, the the small, historic capital of Sierra Leone. This city offers some of the most stunning beaches on the continent and a puslating energy that will make you quickly forget about the country's relatively recent civil war (early 2000s) and the ongoing realities of its 'blood diamond' conflict. To be frank, I wasn't expecting much from Freetown, but I was pleasantly surprised with just how much this small capital has to offer in terms of historical and cultural attractions.

Apart from the myriad of British colonial buildings and its distinctive energetic vibe, the real highlight of my time in Freetown was meeting its friendly people. Here, you'll find some of the most welcoming people in West Africa, who are always up for a spontaneous conversation as you sightsee your way around this amazing city.

Would you visit Freetown? Let me know in the comments!

In this week's video, I take you along on a full tour to discover Freetown, the chaotic and intense capital city of Sierra Leone. Nestled in the southwestern corner of West Africa along the Atlantic coast, this small, historic capital offers some of the most stunning beaches on the continent and puslating energy that will make you quickly forget about the country's relatively recent civil war and the ongoing realities of its 'blood diamond' conflict. To be frank, I wasn't expecting much from Freetown, but I was pleasantly surprised with just how much this small capital has to offer in terms of historical and cultural attractions.

I begin my tour with a visit to the wide golden sands of Lumley Beach, the city's top draw and the epicenter of the city's bustling energy. From there, I move on to the city center to check out the historic Cotton Tree (a symbol of freedom from slavery) and tour the National Museum of Sierra Leone, where I learn about the country's many unique tribes and cultures. After, I take a walk around downtown to admire the historic churches and British colonial buildings that dot the capital, and take a keke ride to check out the ruins of the 19th century Old Fourah Bay College - the first Western-style University in the whole of Africa. From there, it was back to the coast to check out the historic Aberdeen Lighthouse, and end my day with a beer & sunset views at Lumley Beach.

All in all, I had a great tour of Freetown and honestly, my stay was TOO SHORT. I would have loved to linger a bit longer here, so I'll definitely be back. Have you ever been completely surprised by a destination (that was better than you expected?) - if so, I'd love to hear your stories in the comments!

Don’t try to create any content in Conakry….

I should have known that vlogging/filming in Guinea’s INTENSE capital city would not be easy... Back in 2019, fellow creators Drew Binsky and Alvaro Rojas experienced problem after problem while visiting Conakry, and were ultimately placed into the back of a police car. Granted, that was during civil unrest, but I had no idea that I’d likewise be detained by the country’s ruling military police shortly into my very first day of sightseeing - leading me to the conclusion offered in the title of this video: DON’T TRY TO VLOG IN CONAKRY! I’ll save you the spoilers, but let me know what you thought of my ordeal by leaving a comment on the video.

Despite the challenges, I did get a good sense of Guinea’s capital (which is actually not a terrible place to visit, with several historical sites and places of interest to keep a West Africa overlander busy!). Join me in this episode as I take you to the old French cemetery of Boulbinet, visit the city’s chaotic fishing harbour teeming with colourful local boats, check out the jaw-dropping Grande Mosque, wander the National Museum of Guinea and its many independence monuments, visit the old Anglican and Catholic churches, and enjoy some of the creature comforts that come with being in what is indeed the country’s most developed and bustling city. After finishing up my sightseeing (and being released from custody!) I hop on the SeaCoach Express ferry, leaving Guinea behind and making my way south to Freetown, the nearby capital of Sierra Leone.

How would you have reacted in my shoes? Have you ever faced any scrutiny while travelling internationally? Let me know in the comments!

Would you ever share a single passenger seat with another person? Would you travel on a car with a goat tied down to the roof? Would you enter a vehicle with cargo tied to the roof that's almost the same size as the vehicle itself? All questions that I had to answer as I prepared to make the journey across the West African nation of Guinea, from the Fouta Djallon Highlands town of Labe to the bustling capital of Conakry.

This 280 km drive would take a full TEN HOURS to complete, crawling at a shockingly slow snail's pace over the endless potholed "highways" of one of Africa's poorest countries. Travel in Guinea is intense, and definitely not for the faint of heart. Leaving Labe behind, I quickly found myself crammed into the back of an overloaded station wagon sharing a single passenger seat with another dude, rolling down the road with more cargo on the roof than the size of the actual vehicle (I legit thought the roof might collapse). With every bump, I questioned my life choices and wondered what had brought me here.

Do you think you could handle travelling in Guinea? Let me know in the comments!

After the first gruelling day of travel, I pulled into the town of Kindia well after dark, and decided to spend the night here instead of continuing on to Conakry in the black of night. The next morning, I continued on to Guinea's chaotic capital, where I took a brief walking tour and oriented myself in preparation for my full exploration of the capital in the days to come (next video!)

After the long haul down from Guinea-Bissau, I leave the city of Labe and head 20 km west into the lush jungle to track down the famed Chutes de Saala waterfall. Along the way, I trek through dense forests with my trusted guide (and motobike driver), descend rugged cliffs, and walk to the very edge of this famed waterfall, looking 150 meters down to the valley below.

The Fouta Djallon is one of the true highlights of any visit to West Africa, and I highly recommend that you take this route if you're headed south on your own transcontinental overland adventure.

Get ready to get WET! Join me on an unforgettable journey to the rugged heart of Guinea-Conakry as I explore its breathtaking Fouta Djallon Highlands region. Though Guinea is seldom-visited and largely unknown to western travellers, this nation definitely packs a strong punch of attractions into a relatively small area. Here, three of Africa's largest rivers originate - the Niger River, the Senegal River, and the Gambia River - earning it the title the "Water Tower of Africa". Join me as I explore this untouched paradise, from its misty peaks to its lush valleys to its cascading waterfalls, each of which make Guinea a nature lover's dream.
