The Forever Canadian unity bus made a weekend stop in Calgary as part of a province-wide push to encourage Albertans to vote for staying in Canada. 🇨🇦

Former Alberta deputy premier and movement leader Thomas Lukaszuk was at Parkdale United Church helping volunteers distribute lawn signs. He said around 160 pop-up locations are operating across the province with more than 18,000 volunteers participating.

The movement launched as a petition against holding a separation referendum, drawing 404,000 verified signatures. With the Oct. 19 referendum approaching, Lukaszuk said the response has been overwhelming.

Calgary is requesting more than $1.2 billion from the Alberta government’s 2027 budget to address critical infrastructure and transit needs. 🏗️

The request includes $448 million for transit capital projects and fleet expansion, $418 million for critical infrastructure, and $320 million for the city’s GamePLAN recreation strategy, including $150 million for a new multisport fieldhouse at Foothills Athletic Park.

The city is also asking the province to boost funding for the Low-Income Transit Pass from $6.2 million to $25 million annually.

“If you don’t ask, you don’t get,” said Ward 13 Coun. Dan McLean, who chairs the intergovernmental affairs committee. The request comes as the Alberta government projects a $2-billion surplus for 2026-27.

A Calgary homeowner turned an unexpected visit by a bobcat family into a wildlife photography opportunity of a lifetime. 📸

Sandstone resident Janice Anderson got a heads-up from a neighbour that a mama bobcat and her five babies were heading her way. She grabbed her camera and found the family chilling in her yard.

“The bobcats were very calm!” Anderson said. They jumped on her gardening beds, sat for a few seconds, then made their way to the front, where the mom lay down on the front lawn.

They left after about a minute, but stayed long enough for Anderson, an aspiring wildlife photographer, to capture the moment. “It was a huge honour having them come right to my yard!”

A water quality advisory issued last week for Lake Chaparral has been lifted, the City of Calgary confirmed Friday. 💧

The advisory was put in place after routine testing detected elevated bacteria levels. Recent test results now show water quality has returned to safe levels.

Residents and visitors can once again use the lake for swimming and other recreational activities.

A 9-year-old Calgary boy has returned home after spending weeks in hospital following a near-drowning in B.C.’s Shuswap River on Aug. 3. 🏠

Paul-Angelo Warren was trapped underwater by driftwood for up to 10 minutes. He spent four weeks at B.C. Children’s Hospital, half of that in a medically induced coma. He was in waist-deep water when the current pulled him under.

“He’s a fighter. This is the miracle boy in our lives,” said his mother, Maria Warren. Bystanders, including a doctor and two nurses with a defibrillator, helped save him.

Angie is expected to make a full recovery and will continue speech, movement and psychological therapy in Calgary.

A Calgary family was shocked to find a massive wasp nest inside their southeast home, with exterminators saying the insects entered through a small crack in the side of the house. 🐝

Sharon L’Hirondelle and her granddaughter came home on Aug. 26 to find wasps swarming outside and inside their Erin Dale Crescent home. The nest was later discovered between the living room and her granddaughter’s bedroom.

“It was horrifying. I was like, oh my God, my poor baby,” L’Hirondelle said. The family and their dog have been staying in a hotel while exterminators treated the home.

The nest has since been removed and incinerated. A University of Alberta expert estimates the hive could have had 3,000 to 4,000 wasps.

Calgary is staring down a proposed 20.2 per cent property tax hike for 2027, with 8.5 per cent, 9 per cent and 8.9 per cent increases to follow in subsequent years. 💸

The numbers, obtained by Global Calgary, have been called “mind-blowing” and “surreal.” Mayor Farkas says they’re not final and the council will ask tough questions, but some councillors are already sounding the alarm.

Coun. Dan McLean said he was “shocked” and predicted taxpayers will be “outraged.” Coun. Landon Johnston says “this council is supposed to be different. Now is the opportunity to show we’re different.”

The city council narrowly voted for a 15 per cent hike next year, followed by 12.5 per cent in 2028, 9 per cent in 2029 and 6 per cent in 2030, still triggering the gag reflex for many.

Calgary is lowering speed limits on nearly 300 residential roads by year-end as part of its Vision Zero safety initiative. 🚗

Lake Bonavista is among the first communities affected, with Lake Bonavista Drive, Lake Crimson Drive and Lake Sylvan Drive dropping from 50 km/h to 40 km/h.

The city reviewed more than 700 collector and community roads, identifying locations with lower operating speeds near schools, playgrounds, residential driveways and curves.

Ward 14 Coun. Landon Johnston says more announcements are coming for Midnapore, Sundance, Walden and Mackenzie Lake. Calgary has recorded 21 fatal collisions this year resulting in 25 deaths, six involving pedestrians.

Calgary has used artificial intelligence to identify its 50 riskiest intersections in hopes of making streets safer after recording 15 pedestrian deaths in 2025, the highest in a decade. 🚦

Martindale Boulevard and Martindale Gate N.E. ranked as the highest-risk intersection, followed by Falshire and Falton Drives N.E., with 16 Avenue and 12 Street S.W. coming in fourth.

At least six pedestrians have been killed so far this year. Laura Shutiak of Youth En Route noted that “the chances of getting killed by a car going 30 km/h is about 10 per cent. At 50 km/h, that jumps to about 75 or 80 per cent.”

The city identified 26 sites that could be upgraded between 2027 and 2030 at a cost of $6 million. More improvements are expected as councillors push for faster action.
