BEAR WARNING + GRASSI LAKES AREA CLOSED βš οΈπŸ»πŸ”οΈ

Alberta Parks has closed the Grassi Lakes area until further notice due to dangerous rockslide conditions following recent heavy rainfall.

The closure includes:

β€’ Grassi Lakes Upper Trail
β€’ Grassi Lakes Interpretive Trail
β€’ Reclaimer Trail
β€’ Spray Lakes Road between the Grassi Lakes turnoff and the top of the hill near the dam

The affected road section is closed to vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians. Alberta Parks says rainfall undermined large rocks, and a significant rockfall occurred on June 1.

A separate bear warning is also in effect for parts of Canmore Nordic Centre Provincial Park after numerous black bear sightings, including a sow with cubs. The warning includes Canmore Trail, the Day Use area, and the Day Lodge area.

Carry bear spray, keep pets on leash, and follow all posted closures and signage.

BEAR WARNING ISSUED FOR LAKE MINNEWANKA TRAIL πŸ»πŸ”οΈ

Parks Canada is asking visitors to use extra caution while travelling and camping along Lake Minnewanka Trail in Banff National Park.

The warning was issued on June 7 after a bear of unknown species entered an unoccupied tent. Parks Canada says bears are frequenting the area, and mating pairs have also been seen during bear breeding season.

The trail is not listed as closed, but visitors should be prepared for a possible bear encounter.

Parks Canada recommends:

β€’ Carry bear spray and know how to use it
β€’ Stay alert, make noise, and watch for fresh bear signs
β€’ Keep at least 100 metres away from bears
β€’ Secure food, pet food, garbage, and scented items
β€’ Keep pets leashed and under physical control
β€’ Supervise children closely

Bear sightings in Banff National Park should be reported to Banff Dispatch at 403-762-1470.

LOCALIZED FLOODING AROUND CANMORE 🌧️

Footage captured around 1 p.m. today shows localized flooding and standing water in parts of Canmore, including pooled water on a roadway, temporary barriers, pumping equipment, and a house pumping water away from the property

With ongoing rain and elevated streamflow conditions, use caution around flooded areas, riverbanks, steep creeks, and low-lying roads. Avoid driving through standing water and respect any posted closures.

If you live in a home with a crawlspace near the Bow River, it’s a good time to check for any water intrusion and make sure your sump pump / pumps are working properly so water levels in the crawlspace stay under control.

BOW RIVER COMMUNITIES PREPARE FOR MORE RAIN πŸŒ§οΈπŸ”οΈ

Communities from Banff to Canmore and Cochrane are monitoring rising water levels as snowmelt combines with a wet weather system moving through the region.

A high-streamflow advisory remains in effect for the Bow River from upstream of Banff to the Ghost Reservoir. Canmore has also added a high-streamflow advisory for local steep creeks.

Environment Canada has issued special weather statements for the region, with 30 to 60 mm of rain expected in many areas through Wednesday. In Canmore, local modelling has shown a wider possible range of 25 to 75 mm over a 72-hour period. Snow is also possible at higher elevations as temperatures drop.

In Banff, nuisance flooding is already affecting some riverside trails. Crews have deployed temporary Tiger Dams along Birch Avenue and added sandbags and preventative protection around the historic Rundle Cabin.

In Canmore, the Town says it is actively monitoring the Bow River and steep creeks. Residents and visitors are being asked to use extreme caution around riverbanks and embankments, which may be unstable or undercut by water.

In Cochrane, residents are being asked to avoid flooded areas, pathways, and riverbanks. Watercraft use on the Bow River is not recommended at this time.

Conditions can change quickly. Keep children and pets back from the river, avoid fast-moving water, and follow official local updates.
