Today we honour Indigenous Veterans Day, a day dedicated to recognizing the First Nations, Inuit, and Métis soldiers who served Canada in times of war, peacekeeping, and military service.
Before Indigenous Veterans Day was first recognized in 1994, the contributions of Indigenous soldiers were largely overlooked in Canadian history. Yet, Indigenous peoples have a long and proud tradition of service. Thousands enlisted during the First and Second World Wars and the Korean War, often travelling great distances from their communities to volunteer; despite not being recognized as Canadian citizens at the time.
Indigenous soldiers brought exceptional skills in tracking, stealth, endurance, and marksmanship to the battlefield. Many became celebrated snipers, scouts, and leaders. However, when they returned home, many faced discrimination, unequal benefits, and barriers to the same supports offered to other veterans.
Today, we honour their courage, sacrifices, and the continued legacy of Indigenous men and women who serve in the Canadian Armed Forces. Their strength, resilience, and dedication to protecting this land remind us of the true meaning of service.
Let us remember and give thanks to all Indigenous Veterans; past, present, and future.
Lest We Forget. 🕊️
