2024 Deportations: Canada deported over 18,000 people in 2024, the highest figure since the 2006-2015 government led by Stephen Harper. The cost for these operations reached approximately $78 million.
2025 Removals: In the 2024-2025 fiscal year, there were a total of 18,084 removals. In the 2025 calendar year, up to October 31st, there were 18,785 total removals, with 8,982 specifically classified as deportation orders (permanent bans).
Primary Reasons: The vast majority of those deported have been asylum seekers whose refugee claims were rejected, accounting for about 79% of deportations in late 2024. Other reasons include non-compliance with visa conditions (such as overstaying a visa) and criminal activity.
Targeted Groups: Indian nationals were the second largest group for removals in 2024 (1,997 individuals) and are on track to surpass that number in 2025 (2,831 as of July 2025), a record high for that demographic.

This surge is occurring amid a broader shift in Canada's immigration policy, with the federal government aiming to tighten targets for both temporary and permanent residents.

Policy Changes: The government has faced public pressure regarding housing shortages and border security concerns, leading to a tougher stance on immigration enforcement.
Increased Funding: The federal government has allocated additional funds to the CBSA to increase the rate and efficiency of deportations.
Growing Backlog: Despite the increased removals, there remains a significant backlog of pending refugee claims, which reached nearly 300,000 cases in late 2025.
Advocate Concerns: Migrant advocates have labeled the high rate of deportations "shocking and unjustifiable," arguing the current system is too restrictive and that some individuals face removal while their appeals are still in process

Previously, provincial law only required these alarms near sleeping areas. However, the new rules mandate protection on every level of your home — including basements and main floors without bedrooms.

This mandate applies to all homes — including detached houses, townhomes and apartments — with gas, oil, or wood-burning furnaces, boilers, hot water heaters, ovens and dryers. They also apply to houses with attached garages.

A major controversy has emerged at Brampton City Hall after reports revealed that more than $24 million in taxpayer funding was approved for an organization linked to Brampton Deputy Mayor Harkirat Singh.

According to an investigative report by The Pointer, the funding was directed to Niwaas Living, a non-profit corporation founded and registered by Singh himself. City council approved two separate funding allocations — $10.8 million and $14 million — for proposed housing projects, even though key questions remain about ownership of land, incorporation timing, and disclosure of potential conflicts of interest.

The article states that:

The deputy mayor voted on funding decisions related to an organization he founded

No conflict of interest was declared during council discussions

One funding approval occurred before the organization was officially incorporated

At the time, the organization did not own the property tied to at least one proposal

Singh has publicly stated that he does not personally benefit financially from the organization. However, governance experts and critics argue that the situation raises serious ethical and transparency concerns, especially when public money is involved.

In this video, we break down:

What exactly was approved by Brampton City Council

How the $24M funding decision unfolded

Why conflict-of-interest rules matter in municipal politics

What questions remain unanswered

This discussion is based on public records and investigative journalism, aimed at helping viewers understand the facts and implications behind one of Brampton’s most talked-about municipal funding decisions.
