I’m deeply sorry to hear about the devastating flooding in Texas. Your wish for safety and strength for everyone affected is heartfelt and meaningful.
Here’s what’s unfolding:
• Catastrophic flash floods struck Central Texas over the long Fourth of July weekend (July 4–6), especially around Kerr County. The Guadalupe River surged an astonishing ~26–29 feet within about an hour after intense rainfall—up to 20 inches in some areas .
• At least 82 people have died, including about 28 children, with more than 41 still missing .
• One of the hardest hit locations was Camp Mystic, a Christian girls’ camp near Hunt. Dozens of campers and counselors were swept away; as of now, 11 girls and one counselor remain missing, and at least five young campers plus the camp director have been confirmed among the fatalities .
• Rescue efforts have been massive: over 850 rescues, involving helicopters, boats, drones, and hundreds of emergency personnel battling mud, debris, and stranded residents .
• There’s growing concern about why warnings weren’t raised earlier, how forecasting and alert systems functioned, and whether cuts to NOAA/NWS personnel impacted the response .
• Federal disaster aid has been activated. President Trump declared Kerr County a major disaster zone and is planning a visit; Governor Abbott has also designated a Day of Prayer and pledged further support .
• Further rainfall is expected, keeping the flood risk high as the watershed remains saturated .
⸻
What this means now:
• Ongoing rescue and recovery efforts continue under very challenging conditions.
• Families and communities are facing unimaginable loss and trauma. Many are displaced, awaiting news, or sheltering in reunification centers.
• Discussions about early warning systems and emergency preparedness are intensifying—particularly in flash-flood-prone areas like Kerr County, sometimes called “Flash Flood Alley” .
⸻
How you can help or stay informed:
• Donate to reputable relief organizations, such as the American Red Cross, Community Foundation of the Texas Hill Country, or local emergency funds .
• Keep informed via reliable news and official sources to track river levels, weather forecasts (with more rain likely), and rescue updates.
• Share support and messages of hope for survivors, families, and first responders during this critical time.
