Doing some VHS transfers for someone's family video archive. It's made me wonder if loads of tinsel was mandatory on all trees at some point.

'Stumbling' upon (without any searching) a piece of one's own personal history can certainly be a moving experience! I was recently attending my daughter's indoor soccer tournament in Fredericton. My father suggested we stay at Mary's while we were there. 82-year-old Mary is one of Dad's cousins I'd never met. As she toured us around her home (which was in fact the same home she grew up in), she showed us the family portrait hanging above her bed. WHOA! It was the first time I had EVER seen a photo of my father's father's parents. I had never 'stumbled' like that before. It was a photo of my great-grandparents and all but one of their 10 children.

Whenever I do presentations about personal history, I like to finish with a quick survey of the room:

1. How many of you can name all 4 of your grandparents? (Usually more than half raise their hand)
2. How many can name all 8 great-grandparents? (Occasionally one person will know).

And then...
3. How many of you ARE grandparents? Now, think of your grandkids. If we continue on this trend, YOUR grandkids' children... They won't even know your NAME. That is... unless you do something about it.

While working at The Mount yesterday, I noticed some folks chatting in the activities room. Since I had a short break, I decided to drop in for a "pop-up" reminiscing session. As it turned out, there were 3 of them (Mrs. Murphy, Helen, Ozzie) who I hadn't seen in years! Helen shared a great story of being stranded OVERNIGHT on the schoolbus when she was 16. We figured it must have been the storm of '61. She even remembered the driver's name!

Personal History tip for the post-Christmas cleanup:

I'm packing away the last of the Christmas decorations. See the shiny little green book? It's a "Memories Ornament". Each year, you write just a little note about what happened that Christmas. Just a few seconds each year while you "pack away Christmas", and your booklet could become one of your family's most valued decorations!

Part of today's ceremony was a re-enactment/testimonies from families who lived through the deportation, specifically in December of 1758. We are thankful to those who kept notes and journals at that time. It's because of those records that we are able to bring the true stories of our ancestors to the young people of today.
