Grade 8 Focus: Grade 8 Math- What Students Are Expected to Know This Term
Students are expected to demonstrate proficiency in solving multi-step equations, inequalities, and modeling data. Key topics expected to be covered or solidified in Term 3:
- Algebra and Functions: Graphing linear equations and understanding the slope-intercept form (\(y=mx+b\)), solving systems of linear equations, and interpreting functions (tables, graphs, equations).
- Geometry: Applying the Pythagorean Theorem to find distances, finding the volume of cylinders, cones, and spheres, and understanding congruence and similarity.
- Numbers and Operations: Working with exponents, scientific notation, and estimating irrational numbers.
- Data and Probability: Analyzing bivariate data (scatter plots) and modeling with linear equations, along with understanding probability.
- Common Core/Typical Expectations: Solving Equations: Students should confidently solve equations with variables on both sides, including those with rational coefficients.Modeling Real-World Scenarios: Using linear equations to represent situations like rates, unit prices, or growth rates.
- Linear Relationships: Distinguishing between linear and non-linear functions based on equations and graphs.
