Dogs fighting in the home can be one of the most difficult and stressful situations for owners AND trainers to deal with.
Most approaches rely on a lifetime of strict management, separation, structure and control of the environment, which, in some extreme cases, may be necessary, but…
Heavy management and control is not a one size fits all solution for aggression in the home, and it’s often a bandaid that’s just waiting to fall off…
In fact, heavy management and over-controlling interactions can even make things MUCH worse, furthering a sense of distrust, unease, and suspicion amongst the dogs.
To truly rehabilitate these cases, we must go beyond obedience, management and control and we have to create a real relationship of trust and understanding between the dogs and humans.
Allowing the dogs to interact in meaningful ways, to communicate freely, and to push and test boundaries are all necessary but often scary steps to truly rehabbing these cases.
Of course this doesn’t just mean letting dogs loose together to “figure it out”, this would be a disaster.
We must have control, but more importantly, we must know when to use it.
