A Second War Efficiency Medal Bar to Major Robert Buell RCIC - 1939-1945 Star; France and Germany Star; Defence Medal; Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Overseas Clasp; War Medal 1939-1945; and Efficiency Medal with CANADA Scroll (MAJOR R.E. BUELL RCIC). Naming is officially impressed on the EM. Mounted to a suspension with swing bar pinback, as worn by the veteran, original ribbons, dark patinas on the latter three silver medals, residue in the recessed areas from cleaning, light contact, better than very fine. Accompanied by his Commission Document (naming him as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Algonquin Regiment, effective March 22, 1939, dated June 5, 1939 at Ottawa, emboss stamped and marked "Twedsmuir" in ink in the upper left corner, 315 mm x 398 mm, lightly soiled), along with copies of his Attestation Papers, Service Records, Application for the Efficiency Medal and Certificate of Service. Footnote: Robert Elton Buell was born in October 1909 in Brockville, Leeds County, Ontario, the son of Charles Watson Buell (1879-1946) and Estelle Blanche Clow (1881-1954). He enlisted with "D" Company, Algonquin Regiment (Reserves), Non-Permanent Active Militia, in March 1939, advancing to the rank of 2nd Lieutenant, before enlisting in the Active Army. Buell signed his Attestation Paper with the Grey & Simcoe Foresters, at Owen Sound, Ontario, on June 21, 1940, naming his next-of-kin as Blanche Estella Buell, stating the he had previous military service with "D" Company, Algonquin Regiment, N.P.A.M. and that his profession was that of Accountant. He was taken on strength at Owen Sound Camp, before being transferred days later to Camp Borden, where he was appointed 2nd Lieutenant Sup.. He proceeded "on command" to the Camp School of Infantry at Niagara-on-the-Lake on July 14, 1940, which was followed by a promotion to Lieutenant on July 26, 1940. He was transferred to Debert Military Camp at Debert, Nova Scotia on April 14, 1941, promoted to Captain on October 14, 1941 and absorbed into the 26th Canadian Army Tank Battalion on April 1, 1942. He qualified as a Driver Class III at Camp Borden on September 5, 1942 and posted to the 26th Army Tank Regiment. He attended Royal Military College in Kingston, Ontario for DDQR while attending the 8th Company Commanders Course from March 7 to May 27, 1943, before returning to Camp Borden. Buell was struck off strength of the Canadian Army in Canada for service overseas, embarking on June 17, 1943 and arriving in the United Kingdom on the 24th. He was transferred to the 6th Armoured Regiment on August 15, 1943, then posted to Canadian Military Headquarters, where he attended the Royal Armoured Corps Tactical School from January 19, 1944 to February 15, 1944. He was transferred to No. 2 Canadian Armoured Corps Reinforcement Unit on April 15, 1944, then posted to No.1 Canadian Army Troops Headquarters on May 27, 1944. Buell embarked the United Kingdom for Continental Europe on July 25, 1944, arriving in France on the 27th, seven weeks after the D-Day invasion. He was to serve with 21st Army Group in France, Belgium and Holland (The Netherlands), before returning to the United Kingdom on March 4, 1945. Upon the ceasing of hostilities, he returned to Canada and was posted to No. 2 District Depot in Toronto, Ontario, then transferred to the National Defence Headquarters in Ottawa, where he was to be EREO in D Administration from August 9, 1945 to December 30, 1945, at which point he returned to Toronto. Buell was struck off strength upon demobilization on January 15, 1946, credited with having served in Canada, the United Kingdom and Continental Europe (France, Belgium and Holland). Buell signed his second Attestation Paper with "A" Company, Algonquin Regiment on June 29, 1948, naming his next-of-kin as Anne Buell of Windsor, Ontario (later Timmins, Ontario) and appointed to the rank of Captain. He and his wife had one son, Richard Buell. He was transferred to the Supplement Reserves on June 29, 1948 and was posted to various locations in Northern Ontario with the Algonquin Regiment, including Kirkland Lake, Timmins, North Bay, Sudbury and Haileybury, with training stints at Camp Petawawa. He was promoted to the rank of Major on June 11, 1949. Buell's Commanding Officer applied for his Efficiency Medal on July 10, 1951, stating his service to that time as, Prewar: Algonquin Regiment (March 22, 1939 to June 17, 1940); followed by his War Service: Grey & Simcoe Foresters (June 18, 1940 to August 15, 1943), 1st Hussars - 6th Armoured Regiment (August 16, 1943 to May 23, 1944), Army Troops Headquarters (May 24, 1944 to May 28, 1945); followed by his demobilization on January 15, 1946.; to his current Post-war regiment when he applied for the EM, the Algonquin Regiment (June 29, 1948 to July 10, 1951). He stated that Buell had completed annual training during the years 1939, 1948, 1949 and 1950. The award was approved on October 16, 1951 and he was promulgated in Supplements to CAO 128-15, Issue No. 248 of 1951. Buell was discharged from service with the Algonquin Regiment on March 5, 1955 and died in 2000
