The motels, bars, bikini shops and takeout food establishments that were once the cultural trademark of Wasaga’s commercial waterfront have been swept away by a wave of new development.

Stonebridge Building Group has already completed their first mixed-use building at the main beach area (Beach Area 1).

Part of a development branded as “The Breakers,” it gives visitors a taste of what the new beach lifestyle will look like. When completed, the development will feature 150 residential units and 31 commercial spaces for shops and cafés, with the goal of supporting a year-round economy.

Construction of a new hotel is also expected to begin at the main beach this year. The Sunray Group, a Toronto-based hospitality and development company, recently announced they will invest $45 million in a full-service Marriott hotel, which will include a new public festival square and an outdoor gathering space.

Tick awareness is becoming increasingly important here in Southern Georgian Bay.

Blacklegged ticks carrying Borrelia, the bacteria that causes Lyme disease, have now been identified in several communities across our region, including areas near Nottawa, Meaford, Mulmur, Elmvale and Tiny Township.

With tick testing now available to Canadians who have been bitten, knowing what to look for and what steps to take can provide valuable information following a potential exposure.

Southern Georgian Bay’s hiking and biking trails already attract new residents and visitors from around the globe. This area’s section of the Bruce Trail, with its magnificent views of Georgian Bay and the Beaver Valley, is world famous. Trails have become integral to the healthy, active life of our community.

This demand has been the driver behind our trail systems newest extension. Now, combined with the Georgian Trail, the Barrie-Collingwood Rail Trail allows riders to travel over 75 kilometres from Meaford to Angus away from traffic!

When Jamie Barry’s oldest son, Jack, was eight years old, he asked his dad if he could teach him how to fish.
The Collingwood contractor was happy to oblige. After all, he’d grown up in Campbellford, fishing on the Trent River every day.

Little did the Collingwood contractor know that, eight years later, teaching one kid would grow to teaching hundreds of children how to fish, spend time in nature, and protect the environment.
