Commercial Fisheries are vital to Atlantic Canada!

The Unified Fisheries Conservation Alliance (UFCA) has been granted intervenor standing in a proceeding commenced in the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia by of Sipekne’katik First Nation.

In this proceeding, it is alleged that the federal Fisheries Act and certain federal regulations unjustifiably infringe upon the Applicants’ treaty right affirmed by the Supreme Court of Canada in the Marshall decisions to fish for trade in pursuit of a moderate livelihood.

This Action is currently in the production of documents stage, meaning all parties, including Sipekne’katik First Nation (plaintiff), Attorney General of Canada (defendant) and the UFCA (Intervenor) are collecting and submitting evidence for argument.

The UFCA needs the financial support to continue representing your vested interest in the commercial fisheries in the courtroom. Everyone who relies on a healthy, sustainable, and fair fishery should be supporting this critical legal challenge: commercial licence holders (all species), deck hands, boat shops, marine supply companies, insurance companies etc.

➡️The UFCA operates solely by volunteers - no paid full time or part time employees. All funds go toward legal fees, government relations, and accounting services.

👇🏼we agree with this post - the illegal poaching is not only a DFO enforcement issue, the province of NS is to blame too👇🏼

The province’s lawyers can amend the buyers licences to clearly state that there will be a zero tolerance policy when it comes to holding, purchasing, the intension to sell, or transport of any seafood products that are caught under the Food, Social and Ceremonial (FSC) fisheries. **FSC products cannot be sold.

If a buyer is caught violating any of the above, their license should be immediately revoked upon conviction with no possibility to purchase a buyer’s licence again whether under their own name or as a listed director of a newly formed company.

Will Minister Craig’s Department continue to stand by and allow the organized, illegal poaching activity to occur in Nova Scotia?

On August 30, 2023 near Moncton, NB fishery officers arrested and later released two individuals from Saulnierville, NSfor infractions under the Fisheries Act.

Fishery officers from Maritimes and Gulf regions seized 110 crates containing over 8,000 lobsters.

The lobsters were released live back into the ocean near Meteghan, NS. Any fishing activity occurring without a required licence or not in compliance with conditions of licence is subject to enforcement action.

Earlier this week, DFO held a media briefing where the Department told journalists that they had sufficient resources to monitor the various lobster fisheries in Nova Scotia.

Below is the Unified Fisheries Conservation Alliance’s (UFCA) response to these statements.
