NEW GOCO CONTRACT GOES THROUGH:
National Laboratory Partners of Canada will take over management of Canadian Nuclear Laboratories tomorrow under a new GoCo contract with Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd. After five months of review, the Competition Bureau agreed November 25 that it would issue a “No Action Letter” on the contract with NLPC. A “No Action Letter” confirms that “we do not intend to challenge the proposed transaction at this time,” the bureau says...

BATTERY SITE WILL BE SAFE, COMPANY SAYS:
A proposed battery energy storage system (BESS) on a private lot in the east end of Deep River will be as safe as safe can be. That was the message delivered to town council last week by Simon Rowland, chief executive officer of Renewable Power Partners (RPP). “Our track record shows we’re experienced, reliable and committed to delivering clean energy solutions that work well,” Rowland told council...

COMPANY TO PITCH BATTERY STORAGE PROJECT:
Deep River council will be hearing a pitch for power. Simon Rowland, chief executive officer of Renewable Power Partners, will make a presentation to council tonight on that company’s proposal to build what it calls a relatively small battery energy storage project at a property in the east end of town off Balmer Bay Road. The company is proposing the project under the Independent Electrical System Operator’s (IESO) second long-term request for proposals to secure new supplies of electricity for Ontario’s power grid...

MPs QUESTION NEW GOCO CONTRACT:
Questions were raised on Parliament Hill again last week about Atomic Energy of Canada’s new GoCo contract for Canadian Nuclear Laboratories. Conservative members of the House of Commons standing committee on natural resources pressed for a full review of AECL’s decision, describing the deal as a “corporate raid” by American companies on Canada’s “strategic nuclear research assets”...

CHILD HIT AFTER LEAVING SCHOOL BUS:
Police are reporting that a child suffered minor injuries after being hit by a car on Highway 17 in the Rolphton area late Tuesday afternoon.

Police say that officers from the Upper Ottawa Valley detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to the scene on Tuesday, November 25, at approximately 4:30 pm. It was learned that a 10-year-old child had just gotten off a westbound school bus and was crossing the road when the eastbound car failed to stop and stuck the child. The bus had its red flashing lights and stop arm activated.

The child was transported to hospital by Renfrew County Paramedics. One person was arrested at the scene. A 29-year-old man from Dorval, Quebec has been charged under the Highway Traffic Act with:
• Careless driving causing bodily harm
• Failing to stop for a school bus with its lights activated

The driver was released and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Pembroke on December 15.

"The OPP encourages all drivers to keep their eyes on the road ahead and be especially alert to school buses which are making frequent stops. Thankfully this child was not seriously hurt, but failing to stop for a stopped school bus can be deadly."

AECL GOCO TO FACE REVIEW IN 2026:
Atomic Energy of Canada’s GoCo management model will be the subject of a review by the auditor general in 2026-27. But who will be operating the GoCo contract at that point is still a little bit up in the air. Tim Hodgson, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources under Prime Minister Mark Carney, responded last week to an online House of Commons petition originally launched earlier this summer by Ole Hendrickson of the Concerned Citizens of Renfrew County and Area...

CANADA HEADED FOR 'DEBT SPIRAL', MP WARNS:
MP Cheryl Gallant says the federal government has put Canada into a “debt spiral” and future generations will pay the price. Speaking last Wednesday in the House of Commons, the day after the federal government tabled its 2025 budget, Gallant said “there is no such thing as a free lunch. That is probably something we should teach kids in schools... Claiming we are the best off in the G7 is like claiming to be the least intoxicated person at an Epstein party.”

COUNCIL TO HIT PAUSE ON "FRIVOLOUS, VEXATIOUS" POLICY?
It seems Deep River council will hit the pause button on plans for a “frivolous, vexatious, or unreasonable requests” policy. Council will receive a report tonight suggesting the town defer the policy to provide more time to “monitor the evolution, implementation and ultimately the performance of provincial programs to deal with these issues”...

LAURENTIAN HILLS FACES STEEP ASSET COSTS:
Laurentian Hills will face steep costs over the next 10 to 20 years as it maintains and replaces its municipal infrastructure. That was the message last Monday as Mike Bly of consultants PSD Citywide Inc presented council with the town’s final asset management plan. To maintain and renew its infrastructure, Bly says the town needs to invest $2.9 million a year over the next 50 years, in today’s dollars...

COUNCIL SINKS MARINA PLAN:
Boaters expecting more slips at the Deep River marina next year have had their hopes sunk. A split decision at the council table last week means a proposal to add 24 new slips added to the facility will be postponed until at least 2027. Mayor Sue D’Eon was the first to pour cold water on the proposal when it came up for the discussion at the council table, arguing the money would be better spent instead on roads “which are more beneficial to people in the community than docks”...

SEVEN FEELS JUST RIGHT, COUNCIL SAYS:
Size matters. That’s the position of Deep River council when it comes to the number of people sitting around the council table. Discussion of the number of council members arose last week in response to a letter from Larry Dumoulin, who wrote the town with “a straightforward suggestion that saves real money without cutting a single service.” “Reduce council members from seven members to five for the next term,” Dumoulin suggested to council...

TOWN TO EXPAND MARINA?
The long waiting list for slip rentals at the Deep River marina could be reduced for next year’s boating season. A recommendation on the table of this week’s council meeting is calling for pre-budget approval to spend $285,000 for a marina dock expansion project. The expansion would provide an additional 24 additional slips, each measuring 16-feet long, located outside the existing marina breakwall...
