Good evening, Iām Ella Smith, and this is *Pulse News Report*
Sweeping United Nations sanctions on Iran have officially come into effect, marking the first time in a decade such measures have been enforced. The sanctions, triggered after last-ditch nuclear talks collapsed, target all dealings connected to Tehranās nuclear and ballistic missile programs. They are also expected to deal a heavy blow to Iranās already troubled economy.
The move comes just three months after U.S. and Israeli airstrikes on Iran, further intensifying tensions in the region. While sanctions are back in place, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized that diplomacy is not over. He urged Tehran to accept direct talks held in good faith and called on UN member states to immediately implement the sanctions, arguing it was necessary for global safety.
European allies echoed this stance. The British, French, and German foreign ministers issued a joint statement reaffirming their commitment to seeking a diplomatic solution to ensure Iran never acquires a nuclear weapon. They also urged Tehran to avoid escalatory actions that could worsen the crisis.
On Iranās side, President Masoud Pezeshkian criticized the U.S. proposal, which demanded the handover of its enriched uranium stockpile in exchange for a short reprieve, calling it unacceptable. Despite this, Iran has allowed UN inspectors to return to its nuclear facilities.
Efforts by Russia and China to delay the sanctions until next April failed to secure enough support in the Security Council. As a result, the measures took full effect at midnight GMT.
This development sets the stage for heightened diplomatic and economic tensions in the months ahead.
