Taqramiut Nipingat Inc Taqramiut Nipingat Inc. (TNI) An extensive consultative process was launched by the Northern Quebec Inuit Association with the people of northern Quebec.

In the early 1970’s, faced with the imminent arrival of electronic media in the territory and the rapid changes that were taking place in living conditions over which the people of the region had little control, the Inuit of Nunavik reacted. A report entitled “The Northerners”, a compilation of a number of accounts given during the consultative meetings, brought to light the pressing need for the

Inuit to have an effective means of communicating with all their communities. At about the same time, with the signing of the James Bay and Northern Quebec Agreement in 1975, new administrative structures were soon to come into being, thus highlighting the need for communication between the various communities and their regional government. Encouraged by the Northern Quebec Inuit Association and the Fédération des coopératives du Nouveau Québec, the Inuit were adamant about having their own voice in the North. Therefore, that same year, they created a radio and television network that broadcast in inuktitut: Taqramiut Nipingat Inc. (TNI), or “Voice of the North”. TNI now has its own Regional Radio Network, which Nunavimmiut can tune into on 94.1FM, and its own Community Television Network where Nunavimmiut can tune in to watch new and old TNI television programming.

✨ Today marks TNI’s 50th anniversary ✨

On September 8, 1975, 50 years ago to the day, Taqramiut Nipingat Inc. was created. Since then, TNI has been committed to providing communication services to the Inuit of Nunavik, while strengthening language and promoting traditional and contemporary culture.

TNI would like to extend a special thank you to its staff, board of directors, partners, collaborators, and listeners for their continued support over the years.

TNI looks forward to continuing its mission to promote, by communication means, the culture and the image of Inuit, by Inuit, to Inuit and to the national and international scenes.
