Through the Toronto Tabla Ensemble, I teach tabla within the traditional North Indian classical rhythmic system, beginning with a strong foundation in technique, recitation, rhythm, discipline and focused practice. Some students study tabla for personal enjoyment, relaxation or spiritual practice, while others continue into ensemble work, studio recording, collaboration with other artists and live performance. Each student can follow the path that is right for them, supported by steady training and my experience of more than 40 years as a tabla teacher, performer and composer. Classes are available in Toronto and online worldwide. Please visit https://torontotabla.com/tabla-classes/ for information and registration.

Begin tabla from the very first stroke.

In these classes, each sound is taught clearly and patiently—one step at a time. The focus is on building a strong foundation, so beginners feel comfortable, steady, and confident from the start.

This is not rushed learning. It is a guided process where every detail is shown, repeated, and understood.

Classes are available in Toronto, and online.

For nearly four decades, I have been teaching tabla in Canada. Generations of students have passed through the classroom—children, teenagers, university students, professionals and members of the Toronto Tabla Ensemble.

The students change, but the work continues: teaching, practising, creating and passing the knowledge on.

A father comes to tabla class with his son. He sits beside him, listens carefully and takes notes. But he is not only helping his son—he is learning too.

This is something I see often in tabla class. Children, parents and adults of different ages sit together, listen, learn and gradually develop their own understanding of rhythm and tabla.

This is one of my youngest tabla students. She went to India for the summer, but she did not want to miss her tabla class in Toronto. So she joined the class online from India and continued learning with everyone.

This is what I value about teaching. From very young students to adults, the class becomes part of their regular life. Distance does not have to interrupt the learning.

In this tabla class, students are working with the concept of single and double through recitation, keeping time and playing. Speaking the bols—the language of the tabla—helps students understand the rhythmic structure before it is played on the instrument.

Tabla is more than rhythm. It is a language.

In this class, I explain how the bols—the spoken language of the tabla—are organised into musical phrases, each with its own internal numerical structure. By understanding these phrases, students begin to see how traditional tabla compositions are built and why they make musical sense.

This approach has helped students from many different backgrounds—musicians, mathematicians, architects, doctors, engineers, IT professionals, and complete beginners—discover a new way of understanding North Indian classical rhythm while building bridges between cultures through music.

Every accomplished tabla player once sat in a beginner's class. The young student featured in this video has been studying tabla for less than a year. Children, teenagers, and adults study together, and over the years many continue on to perform with the Toronto Tabla Ensemble.
