I haven’t read a single book this month. but I have 5 essays that genuinely shifted something in me, and i think you should too.
1. Lessons from the Fairness of African Fractal Societies (Aeon)
the idea that African societies were “primitive” or chaotic before colonisation is a lie. this essay breaks down how fractal logic, self-similar patterns at every scale, was built into African architecture, governance, and social structures long before the west had a word for it.
2. An Image of Africa — Chinua Achebe
Achebe goes line by line through Heart of Darkness and names exactly what Conrad was doing, using Africa as a backdrop, a darkness, a mirror for European anxiety. it’s a masterclass in reading the colonial gaze.
3. Decolonising the Mind — Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o
about language as a site of colonial control. when they made us write, think, and dream in their languages, that was the deeper conquest. this one stays with you.
4. We Should All Be Feminists — Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
most people know this as a book but it started as a TEDx talk in Lagos in 2012. Which is watched between 3 and a million times
5. Africa kills her sun — Ken Saro-Wiwa
Africa Kills Her Sun is a thought-provoking reflection on postcolonial Africa, asking whether individuals create broken societies or are broken by them.
