PART 2 on stories they should have taught us in school. This is a collection of stories I come across while educating myself on African History.

Is there a story that you think should be on this list, drop it in the comments and I will make a part 3!

One of my goals this year was to explore different cultures through books, and so far I’ve read three books by non-African authors, with a few more still on my reading list.

During our first Efiwe meeting, I realized just how much reading I still have left to do. There are so many stories, perspectives, and cultures I haven’t explored yet.

In this video, I’m sharing some book suggestions I’ve picked up over the past few days, along with a few recommendations based on my own reading experience. Let me know which ones you’ve read and whether my analysis is accurate—or if you’d describe them differently.

If you’d love to join our next Efiwe meeting on the 28th, drop EFIWE in the comments and I’ll send you the link.

Save this if you needed the reminder that the stress can be the privilege, and if you’ve been thinking about going back to school or chasing something that scares you, tell me where you are in the comments. This one’s for us. 😌

I haven’t read a single book this month. but I have 5 essays that genuinely shifted something in me, and i think you should too.

1. Lessons from the Fairness of African Fractal Societies (Aeon)
the idea that African societies were “primitive” or chaotic before colonisation is a lie. this essay breaks down how fractal logic, self-similar patterns at every scale, was built into African architecture, governance, and social structures long before the west had a word for it.

2. An Image of Africa — Chinua Achebe
Achebe goes line by line through Heart of Darkness and names exactly what Conrad was doing, using Africa as a backdrop, a darkness, a mirror for European anxiety. it’s a masterclass in reading the colonial gaze.

3. Decolonising the Mind — Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o
about language as a site of colonial control. when they made us write, think, and dream in their languages, that was the deeper conquest. this one stays with you.

4. We Should All Be Feminists — Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
most people know this as a book but it started as a TEDx talk in Lagos in 2012. Which is watched between 3 and a million times

5. Africa kills her sun — Ken Saro-Wiwa
Africa Kills Her Sun is a thought-provoking reflection on postcolonial Africa, asking whether individuals create broken societies or are broken by them.

SAVE This. COME back to it. PICK one and START there 📖
