Safety on our streets starts with paying attention to what residents are experiencing.

As East Gwillimbury grows, traffic patterns are changing, and residents are raising important questions about speeding, cut-through traffic, neighbourhood safety, and how we work with York Regional Police.

This week’s policy looks at practical ways to address those concerns, from traffic safety measures and traffic calming to stronger connections between residents and police.

Because feeling safe on your own street and in your own home matters.

As our community grows, so does the traffic on our streets. Residents shouldn’t have to worry about speeding on the road their kids walk to school on. Safety has to be the first consideration in how we plan and design our roads, not an afterthought when something goes wrong.

School is back, and so is the traffic on our streets. As Mayor, I’ll make safety the first consideration, not an afterthought.

I’m focused on safer streets and safer neighbourhoods:

• Re-establish the Town’s Traffic Safety Committee, covering roads and trails
• Invest in speed boards, signage, and traffic calming infrastructure
• Review street patterns where commuter traffic cuts through our neighbourhoods
• Establish a Community Safety Committee working with York Regional Police and residents
• Explore bringing back Neighbourhood Watch and host annual YRP information evenings

Feeling safe in your home and on your street is fundamental to a strong community.

This week, I shared my plan to advance a high school in East Gwillimbury.

We are the only municipality in York Region without a public high school, in a community of nearly 45,000 people that keeps growing. The case is already made: the YRDSB owns property here identified for a high school, more locations sit in our community plans, the Board’s own 2024 Development Charge Background Study shows we’ve reached the enrolment levels, and education development charges are collected on every new home built here.

My plan brings forward a Committee of Council to advance this file, moves a formal Council resolution to put our position on the record with the Board and the Province, and opens direct dialogue about co-locating municipal facilities like a community theatre and sports infrastructure with a new school.

Because our kids deserve a high school in their own community.

A beautiful day out in Sharon today.

Being able to walk these streets, connect with neighbours, listen to their concerns, and hear what matters most made today especially meaningful.

There’s nothing like getting out, having real conversations, and staying connected to the community.

A wonderful day out across East Gwillimbury yesterday.

From knocking on doors and connecting with residents by phone and email, to the Pasta Dinner at Queensville United Church, supporting the East Gwillimbury Eagles Basketball Open House, and attending the annual Illumination of the Sharon Temple.

So many great community events, conversations, and people all in one day. This is what makes East Gwillimbury such a great place to call home.
