It was June 19, 1865, the day when Major General Gordon Granger ordered the final enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation in Texas at the end of the American Civil War. So today we honour many black composers and performers, from around the world, some who are Canadian, American, British and Nigerian citizens. Canadians include Luke Welch, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Maxine Thevenot, Ensemble Obiora, Maria Corley, Oskar Morawetz, CBC Vancouver Orchestra, and Oscar Peterson.

Despite his long and successful career, Johnny Cash was dropped by his long-time label Columbia Records in the late 1980’s. After casting about for a few years he was offered a contract with producer Rick Rubin's American Recordings label. Tonight we’re going to listen to the fourth of these albums, this one is titled “THE MAN COMES AROUND”. This was the last album released during Cash’s lifetime and is considered by some critics to be his finest work towards the end of his life.
