Today’s episode is a replay of the February 15 heart month episode, honouring The Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute and VAD program, and Brad and Leanne Smoliak. On August 11, Brad passed away after living with a VAD (Ventricular Assist Device) for 7 years, from the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute VAD Program, helping give him a second chance at life. Brad was a chef, cardiac patient, passionate advocate for heart health, and dear friend and mentor to so many. In a testament to the number of lives he touched, last Monday an enormous gathering celebrated the life of this indomitable human being at the Jubilee Auditorium. I was reminded in speaking to a friend of Brad’s, that he didn’t just meet people, he altered them: with his spirit, his work ethic, his and Leanne’s never-ending contributions to the community, his smile, his sense of humour and laugh, and his love, especially for Leanne, his partner and soulmate. (not to mention his cuisine!). Leanne and Brad’s goal was to raise a million dollars for the Maz, and I’d love to help them reach that goal. Visit “givetouhf.ca" to donate. It was honour to share my voice in singing at the service on Monday, and one of the songs Leanne requested was Smile by Charlie Chaplin, which I’ll play at the end of the show in place of Indie Arie’s Heart of the Matter. I urge you to live your life in the truest way possible for you, and never give up a chance to be the smile or light for someone else.

On this day in 1981, 45 years ago, Ottawa City Council named 'Paul Anka Day' to celebrate his 25th anniversary in show-business. The council also named a street in Ottawa 'Paul Anka Drive' in his honour. The Canadian singer songwriter had written over 900 songs including the classic 'My Way'.
