Ticks carrying Lyme disease are becoming more common in Edmonton and surrounding areas, according to experts.

The eTick tracking app shows more tick sightings in urban parts of the city, particularly in river valley parks and other damp, wooded areas. A blacklegged tick, the species known to carry Lyme disease, was reported in Edmonton earlier this spring, with dozens of tick incidents recorded since.

Experts say warmer temperatures and urban expansion may be helping ticks thrive closer to where people live, work and play. Residents are encouraged to check themselves, their children and pets for ticks after spending time outdoors this season.

The City of Edmonton has launched a new campaign aimed at bringing more people downtown, with more than 1,000 events and activities planned through December.

Residents and visitors can enjoy live music, fitness and art classes, mini golf and other activities in parks, transit hubs and public spaces, all designed to support local businesses and create a more vibrant downtown atmosphere.

City officials say the initiative will help attract more visitors to the core while encouraging people to explore local restaurants, parks, events and community spaces throughout the summer and fall.

A major stretch of westbound Yellowhead Trail was closed Monday afternoon after heavy rainfall caused flooding on the roadway. The closure affects traffic between 97 Street and 124 Street, with drivers facing significant delays and detours.

The flooding comes as Edmonton and much of central Alberta continue to deal with a prolonged rain event. Weather forecasters warn an additional 50–100 mm of rain could fall in some areas, raising concerns about more flooded roads, overwhelmed drainage systems, and hazardous driving conditions through the week.

Canada’s economy has slipped into a technical recession after GDP contracted for a second straight quarter, according to new data from Statistics Canada.

The economy shrank at an annualized rate of 0.1% in Q1 2026, following a revised 1.0% decline in Q4 2025. While some economists say the back-to-back declines meet the definition of a technical recession, others argue the slowdown was minimal and could be revised in future reports.

Business investment, residential investment, and government spending all fell, while ongoing trade uncertainty and U.S. tariffs continue to weigh on growth.

Despite the weak start to the year, early estimates suggest the economy rebounded in April, with GDP expected to grow 0.4%.

Jet Greaves stopped all 34 shots as Canada blanked the United States 4-0 Thursday in the world hockey championship quarterfinals.

The Americans pushed hard throughout the game, especially early in the third, but Greaves stood tall to send Canada to the semifinals just three months after falling to the U.S. in the Olympic final.

“This is the best rivalry there is in hockey,” Greaves said after the win.

An Edmonton judge has found a dog owner guilty of criminal negligence causing death after an 11-year-old boy was fatally attacked by two Cane Corsos in south Edmonton in 2024.

Justice Eric Macklin ruled that Crystal MacDonald failed to take reasonable steps to keep Kache Grist safe, despite knowing the dogs posed a significant risk due to several previous violent incidents.

Court heard the dogs had a history of aggression, including attacks on people and other animals, before the fatal attack that killed Kache while he was visiting his father during spring break.

A sentencing hearing is scheduled for Sept. 2, while MacDonald’s lawyer says an appeal is being considered.

Edmonton police and the Alberta government are opening a new “Integrated Stabilization Centre” this summer for people experiencing drug or mental health crises. The centre will allow officers and health professionals to detain and assess individuals for up to 24 hours, or longer under the Mental Health Act, with the goal of connecting them to treatment and recovery services instead of jail.

EPS says the centre is meant to reduce pressure on emergency rooms, EMS, and frontline officers while helping vulnerable people in crisis. Critics, however, are raising concerns about forced detainment and the fear of arrest pushing more people to use drugs alone.

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre says he’ll campaign across Alberta to keep the province in Canada if a separation referendum moves forward this fall.

Poilievre called himself a “strong Canadian federalist” and said all Conservative MPs in Alberta will campaign for unity, while also pushing Ottawa to support Alberta’s oil and gas sector and give the province a “fair deal.”

The comments come as Alberta separatist tensions continue to grow following a court ruling that blocked a proposed independence referendum petition. Premier Danielle Smith has continued to face pressure from separatist groups to bring the issue to voters.
