If your spouse is already inside Canada, status planning becomes extremely important. One of the biggest mistakes people make is assuming that submitting a spousal sponsorship application automatically protects their spouse’s temporary status. It does not always work that way. Expired status, late extension applications, poor timing around a spousal open work permit, or even leaving Canada at the wrong time can all create unnecessary problems and delays. In some cases, the application may still continue, but the timing, work options, and overall strategy can be affected in a major way. Understanding these rules early can help couples avoid stress, lost time, and costly mistakes.

Those of you considering applying for AAIP, this may be relevant to you.

Alberta has held 36 AAIP draws so far in 2026, but candidates are not invited based only on their points score.

AAIP invitations can depend on a combination of score, Alberta labour market needs, application volumes, available nominations, occupations in demand, sectors in demand, and specific stream priorities.

So before focusing only on your score, look at whether your profile matches what Alberta is currently selecting for.

General information only. Always review the latest AAIP updates before making immigration decisions.

Your application was refused, but you believe IRCC made a mistake.

In some situations, IRCC may consider a reconsideration request. Common reasons can include an administrative error, a procedural fairness issue, or a clear factual error in the decision.

But reconsideration is not just about asking IRCC to look at the file again.

The quality of the request matters. You need to clearly explain what went wrong, connect your explanation to the documents already submitted, and present the facts in a structured and professional way.

A reconsideration request is not guaranteed, but when there is a clear error, it may be an option worth reviewing carefully.

Being married to a Canadian citizen or permanent resident does not automatically give you legal status in Canada. Spousal sponsorship and temporary status are two separate things.

If your spouse is in Canada as a visitor, worker, or student, they may still need to maintain valid status while the PR application is being processed. If they are a visitor and need to stay longer, they may need to apply for a visitor record before their current status expires.

A visitor record is not a visa, and inland sponsorship does not automatically give work authorization. A sponsored spouse may need a valid work permit before they can work in Canada.

Always check your status, expiry date, and eligibility before applying.

Your PR tracker says “background check in progress” and you are wondering what is actually happening behind the scenes.

This stage is not just one simple check. IRCC may be reviewing criminality, security screening, and the details you provided in your application, including travel history, employment history, addresses, and documents.

It can feel frustrating when the tracker shows the same status for weeks or months, but background checks can involve multiple agencies and different types of verification.

The key point: background check does not automatically mean there is a problem. It means IRCC is completing the admissibility review before making a final decision.

Comment “PR” if your tracker is stuck and you want more videos explaining each stage of the PR process.

My client received an AAIP Alberta Opportunity Stream invitation after submitting her profile on March 16. The invitation came on May 6.

Timelines can vary, but once you receive an invitation, you need to act quickly. You have 15 days to activate and 30 days to submit the full application.

Stay prepared, keep your documents ready, and check your email regularly.

This is general information, not legal advice.

If you received your Express Entry ITA take the following steps? This is where people get excited, rush the application, and make unavoidable costly mistakes.

If you receive an Invitation to Apply, you get 60 days to submit your permanent residence application. If you do nothing and let it expire, your profile is removed from the pool.

First, review every single detail in your profile. Be sure if you are answering the questions correctly. Misinterpreting questions is very common for refusal causes. If your situation changed, or your spouse’s situation changed, recalculate your score before you submit. Second, start organizing your documents right away. Common documents can include your passport, medical exam, police certificates, proof of funds, and civil status documents like marriage documents or documents for dependent children, depending on your case. Third, is managing your timing for police certificates ..do not wait on police certificates. I have seen these take a long time. If you cannot get one by the deadline, the you will have to prepare to submit a letter of explanation plus proof that you made your best effort to get it on time.

And here is a big one people miss. After you submit, you may need to give biometrics. In most cases, IRCC says you should pay the biometric fee when you submit to avoid delays, and once you get the biometric instruction letter, you usually have 30 days to complete biometrics.

AAIP has changed how most worker streams work. In many cases, workers can no longer start by submitting a full application directly. Instead, they now need to submit a Worker Expression of Interest, enter the pool, and wait to be selected.

This applies to major streams such as the Alberta Opportunity Stream, Alberta Express Entry Stream, Rural Renewal Stream, and Tourism and Hospitality Stream. A Worker EOI is not a nomination application. It is a pre application stage where your profile is scored and ranked based on factors like human capital, economic factors, and adaptability.

Important points to know:
You can only have one Worker EOI at a time.
Your EOI stays valid for 12 months.
Selection depends on score, labour market priorities, nomination spaces, and application levels.
As of April 7, 2026, there is a $135 Worker EOI fee.
