To be classified as a vitamin, a compound generally must meet 5 key criteria:

1. Essentiality: The substance must be essential for normal physiological function (growth, repair and maintenance processes)

2. The body cannot synthesize the compound in adequate amounts to fulfill necessary growth maintenance and repair processes

3. Deficiency syndrome: The absence or deficiency of the substance leads to a specific deficiency disease or health disorder (oftentimes predictable but not always)

4. Organic Nature: Vitamins are organic compounds, meaning they contain carbon. This distinguishes them from inorganic minerals. However, vitamins are distinct from other organic compounds like macronutrients (protein, carbohydrate, fat)

5. Required in minute amounts: vitamin are required in small amounts to perform their functions. Unlike macronutrients, which are needed in larger amounts, vitamins are needed in much smaller amounts.

When your stomach growls, your body isn’t just craving food—it’s activating one of the most powerful healing processes known to science. It’s called autophagy, which literally means “self-eating.” But don’t be alarmed. This isn’t a bad thing. In fact, it’s a natural cellular detox mechanism where your body breaks down and recycles damaged or aging components inside your cells. Think of it like spring cleaning for your insides. When you go for several hours without eating—especially past the 14–16 hour mark—your body’s insulin levels drop. This triggers your cells to switch from digesting food to tidying up their own internal mess. They start breaking down dysfunctional mitochondria, misfolded proteins, and toxins, turning them into usable materials or clearing them out completely. The result? You get fresher, more efficient cells and potentially lower risk of diseases like Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and type 2 diabetes.

It’s wild how seed oils like canola, soybean, and corn oil have been marketed as “heart-healthy” when the process to make them is anything but. Here’s a touch of the morbid reality of seed oils:

1. It Starts with Industrial Seeds:
These oils come from crops like soybeans, corn, and rapeseed (should be obvious with a name like that but that’s also know as canola). They aren’t pressed like olive oil or churned like butter but instead chemically extracted.

2. Chemical Solvents:
To get oil out of these tiny seeds, manufacturers use hexane, a chemical solvent. You know, the same stuff used in industrial cleaning and glue production. But sure, let’s drizzle it on our salads, right?

3. High Heat & Deodorising:
The oils are exposed to extremely high heat, which oxidizes them, basically turning them rancid before they even hit the bottle. But you won’t smell it because they’re deodorised to mask the odour. You’re eating rancid oil, but it smells fresh, so no one notices.

4. Bleaching & Additives:
The oil is then bleached to remove any colour, and additives are tossed in to extend shelf life. Because nothing says “natural” like having to bleach your food.

5. Inflammation Factory:
These oils are loaded with omega-6 fatty acids, which, in excess, throw your body’s natural balance out of whack and fuel chronic inflammation. The root cause of a lot of modern health problems.

Meanwhile, traditional fats like butter, tallow, olive oil (only consume raw not cooked), and coconut oil are made the old-fashioned way—with minimal processing and no chemical cocktails. If your Great Grandma wouldn’t recognise it, maybe it doesn’t belong in your kitchen.

According to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), the recalled products were distributed in Newfoundland and Labrador, Ontario and Quebec, Canada.
