It is with heavy hearts and much sorrow we inform you of the sudden passing yesterday, July 14th, of active EFFU member Emergency Communication Specialist Qualified, Nicole Heatherington. Nicole is survived by Craig, a Deputy Fire Chief in Spruce Grove, and her son Tavish. Our condolences go out to Nicole’s family, friends and loved ones as they mourn during this difficult time.

Continuous training in all areas of Vancouver is an important component for our firefighters and specialty teams. Each time they train in complex environments they learn and develop skills they can bring to all other calls. Here our technical rescue team is preparing to lower an ‘injured’ worker on to the Fireboat far below. Individual groups practice the skills to master their job, but also increases communication between all groups for whatever the next call throws at them. Thank you to the Port operators for inviting us frequently!

“Based upon this testing you might want to consider using a lower knot efficiency when doing system safety factor calculations. Instead of the old 75-80% it is probably safer to use 50% for all knots.”

Knot “efficiency”, or the strength of a rope with a knot, often comes up here and most discussions seem to end up pointing to publications like the CMC Field Guide.

I know a few people here saw it but I must thank CMC instructors John McKently and Leroy Harbach for the presentation and paper from ITRS 2024.
