Today's Gratitude: That I somehow found a partner who enjoys flowers and gardening/yard work as much as I do. Although, the older I get, the more I wonder about this as a way to relax. 😊 We worked for hours today to get a chunk of the weeds pulled, several old plants out and new plants in. I took author Romie Christie's inspiring book See You in Le Touquet: A Memoir of War and Destiny with me on a vacation to France!
This is the amazing story of how Romie's parents met... Her father is known as the wartime liberator of the town of Le Touquet Paris-Plage, France. It is a beautiful place that sits on the shore of the English Channel, south of Calais and north of Juno Beach.
Romie's mother, Dorothy Borutti, was born in England and grew up in Le Touquet. During the war, she was imprisoned for listening to English radio and vowed that when she was released, she would embrace the first person who came to liberate the town from its German occupiers. Canadian Army Captain Sandy MacPherson, who later became a Saskatchewan judge, felt that embrace from Dorothy as he drove into town in an Army Jeep in September 1944!

June 6, 1944. Today, we mark the anniversary of D-Day and the Battle of Normandy. 14,000 Canadians stormed Juno Beach, showing unparalleled bravery in the face of fierce resistance. 359 Canadians made the ultimate sacrifice that day.

We stand in silent gratitude for the heroes who broke through the Atlantic Wall and paved the path to liberation.

Oh, I miss Reg Harrison. In this video, the late Reg "Crash" Harrison reflects on his flights as a bomber pilot on D-Day, in June 1945. Thank you to Thomega Entertainment Canada Remembers Documentaries for documenting Reg's story and those of many other Canadian War veterans. Lest we forget.
