One supplement Iโ€™ve been looking into more lately is Fortetropin (the ingredient used in the MYOS canine muscle formula)

Fortetropin is a bioactive compound derived from fertilized egg yolk that has been researched for supporting muscle maintenance and reducing muscle loss associated with aging, injury, surgery, inactivity, and even certain chronic conditions.

This is NOT just a โ€œhigh protein powderโ€ โ€” it works a bit differently and is thought to help support muscle through signaling pathways involved in muscle maintenance and muscle breakdown.

I know itโ€™s definitely on the pricier side as far as supplements goโ€ฆ

โ€ฆbut Iโ€™ve seen quite a few people report really nice results in:
โ€ข senior dogs
โ€ข dogs recovering from surgery
โ€ข dogs with hind end weakness
โ€ข muscle wasting
โ€ข dogs losing muscle from inactivity or chronic illness

I originally purchased it for Lyric, as many dogs with cancer can experience muscle loss/cachexia, and she was also on prednisone โ€” which absolutely can contribute to muscle wasting over time.

Now Iโ€™m considering trialing it with Treble

Treble is almost 11 years old, and honestly? Overall I think heโ€™s doing AMAZING for his age and chronic issues.

His ears are doing SO much better lately (we only had one flare up in the last month, compared to weekly or twice weekly before ๐Ÿ˜ญ), his digestion has improved a lot, and he has been eating MUCH better overall.

That saidโ€ฆ heโ€™s never been a very food-driven dog and has always been naturally lean/thin due to years of appetite issues, reflux, and gut problems.

I did reduce his protein somewhat for a period because it genuinely seemed to help his digestion, but now that heโ€™s doing better in that department knock on wood ๐Ÿคฃโ€ฆ we are slowly increasing it again.

I do think he has some mild muscle loss/weakness in his back end, although itโ€™s honestly hard to tell through all the fur ๐Ÿ˜‚

And I also think northern breeds like this naturally tend to be more front-end powerhouses.

The fact that heโ€™s still intact is likely in his favour as well from a muscle-maintenance standpoint.

But overall, Iโ€™d love to support his rear end strength and help him age as gracefully as possible.

At the end of the day, Iโ€™m not trying to turn him back into a 2-year-old sled dog ๐Ÿ˜…

I just want my boy to enjoy his golden years with strength, comfort, dignity, and joy.

And honestlyโ€ฆ after everything weโ€™ve been through together, it finally feels like weโ€™re starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel ๐Ÿ–ค

We had a good mixed week, a few crazy days of mosquitoesโ€ฆ some rain, but also some sun!

But I guess we canโ€™t complain, we havenโ€™t had any smoke *knock on wood* ๐Ÿ˜…

Is there a place that exists, that is warm, not overly humid, but likeโ€ฆ no bugs? Or, is that asking too much? LOL!

Iโ€™ve had overweight dogs before myself, so absolutely no judgement here ๐Ÿค

In my case, hypothyroidism played a role, which can definitely make weight loss trickier. Many medications can ALSO contribute to weight gain, increased appetite, fluid retention, reduced activity, and metabolic changesโ€ฆ so sometimes there is more going on than simply:
โ€œthe dog just eats too muchโ€

If your dog struggles with weight, I HIGHLY recommend discussing a FULL thyroid panel with your veterinarian, especially if your dog also has:
โ€ข low energy
โ€ข skin/coat issues
โ€ข chronic ear problems
โ€ข muscle loss
โ€ข recurrent infections

Now yesโ€ฆ calories DO matter!

But a lot of people are told to simply:
โ€œfeed lessโ€
โ€œcut treatsโ€
โ€œjust add green beansโ€

And honestly? That approach can backfire sometimes.

Dogs can become:
โ€ข constantly hungry
โ€ข food obsessed
โ€ข scavengers
โ€ข nutrient deficient
โ€ข weaker from muscle loss

Because when we drastically reduce food intake
we ALSO reduce vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and essential fatty acids.

And this is where things become more nuanced ๐Ÿค“

Whether feeding kibble, raw, canned, freeze dried, or home cooked, the goal should be:

Sometimes that means:
โ€ข increasing protein density
โ€ข using leaner proteins
โ€ข modifying fat intake strategically
โ€ข improving satiety
โ€ข slowing down treats/snacks
โ€ข supporting joints and mobility first
โ€ข increasing exercise slowly and appropriately

For some dogs, prescription or weight loss diets CAN help.

For others?
They stay hungry, hate the food, lose muscle too quickly, or simply donโ€™t tolerate the ingredients well.

And just switching to raw doesnโ€™t automatically solve the issue either. A poorly balanced homemade or raw diet can absolutely lead to deficiencies, excesses, digestive issues, and poor muscle retention.

Weight loss should NEVER just be:
โ€œmake the dog smallerโ€

The goal is:

And ideally?
Weight loss should be:
๐—ฆ๐—Ÿ๐—ข๐—ช ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐˜€๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—ฑ๐˜†

Especially in:
โ€ข seniors
โ€ข hypothyroid dogs
โ€ข mobility-challenged dogs
โ€ข dogs with chronic disease

Because carrying excess weight can absolutely impact:
โ€ข joints and mobility
โ€ข heart health
โ€ข stamina
โ€ข inflammation
โ€ข heat tolerance
โ€ข long-term comfort
โ€ข overall longevity

I work with owners to help dogs lose weight in a more strategic and supportive way, while still optimizing:
โ€ข nutrition
โ€ข muscle retention
โ€ข digestion
โ€ข mobility
โ€ข overall resilience

If you need help with your:

โ€ข mobility-challenged dog

One thing I think people REALLY underestimate is just how metabolically different cats are from dogs.

Cats are not โ€œsmall dogsโ€

They are basically tiny desert-adapted obligate carnivores with very weird little livers ๐Ÿ˜‚

And honestly?

This is one reason I personally think modern dry kibble lifestyles are often MUCH less ideal for cats than they are for dogs.

Not because kibble is โ€œpoisonโ€

Not because every cat eating kibble is doomed.

โ€ฆbut because feline physiology is EXTREMELY specialized.

Their liver keeps many protein-processing enzymes running at a relatively high rate ALL the time.

Even if dietary protein drops.

So unlike humans (and even dogs to a degree), cats are not very metabolically flexible.

Their body still expects:
โ€ข amino acids
โ€ข animal tissues
โ€ข moisture-rich prey
โ€ข high protein intake

โ€ฆbasically constantly.

โ€œWhy would I manufacture nutrients myself? The mouse already did thatโ€ ๐Ÿ˜‚

Cats also have limited ability to:
โ€ข make taurine efficiently
โ€ข convert beta carotene into vitamin A
โ€ข convert plant omega-3s into DHA/EPA efficiently
โ€ข synthesize certain nutrients omnivores handle better

Which means they evolved expecting PRE-FORMED nutrients from animal tissues.

Cats evolved from desert-adapted ancestors.

They naturally:
โ€ข have a lower thirst drive
โ€ข produce highly concentrated urine
โ€ข were designed to obtain much of their hydration from prey

Meaning moisture matters A LOT more than many people realize.

This is where things can get a little weird with some modern indoor cat lifestyles:
โ€ข low moisture intake
โ€ข dry food only
โ€ข obesity
โ€ข inactivity
โ€ข stress
โ€ข concentrated urine
โ€ข low muscle mass

โ€ฆand suddenly we start seeing:
โ€ข urinary issues
โ€ข metabolic dysfunction
โ€ข constipation
โ€ข obesity
โ€ข diabetes risk
โ€ข kidney strain

Again

This is NOT me saying kibble is โ€œtoxicโ€

Some cats genuinely do okay on it.
Some owners truly cannot afford other options.

And some therapeutic kibble diets absolutely have their place.

I do think feline nutrition deserves WAY more nuance and respect than it often gets.

Cats are not just โ€œeasy petsโ€ that can live off crunchy cereal forever ๐Ÿ˜…

Their metabolism is honestly fascinating.
And also a little terrifying LOL.

Dogs are metabolically adaptable omnivorous scavengers.

Cats are highly specialized hypercarnivores that evolved expecting:
โ€ข animal tissue
โ€ข moisture
โ€ข protein
โ€ข prey-based nutrition

โ€ฆand modern lifestyles do not always match that biology very well.

When a dog starts having skin problems โ€” itching, hair loss, infections โ€” the conversation almost always goes straight to:
โ€œfood allergy?โ€
โ€œenvironmental allergy?โ€

And while those absolutely can be part of the pictureโ€ฆ they are not always the root cause. Sometimes, the skin is reflecting something deeper going on in the body.

Jazz decided to help herself to some fresh dandelion flowers on our walk the other day ๐Ÿ˜…

And honestly? Dandelions are actually pretty interesting little plants!

In herbalism, ๐—ฑ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ๐—ฒ๐—น๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป ๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐—ผ๐˜ and ๐—น๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—ณ have traditionally been used to support:
โ€ข digestion
โ€ข bile flow
โ€ข liver support
โ€ข urinary/kidney function
โ€ข mineral intake

The leaves are more mineral-rich and gently diuretic, while the root is often used more for digestion and liver/bile support.

Even the flowers are edible! Humans use them in things like:
โ€ข teas
โ€ข syrups
โ€ข jams/jellies
โ€ข salads
โ€ข fritters

And yesโ€ฆ you can absolutely toss a few fresh petals into your dogโ€™s bowl as a little whole food extra ๐ŸŒผ

BUTโ€ฆ go slow!

Too much dandelion (especially suddenly) can cause:
โ€ข loose stool
โ€ข gas
โ€ข digestive upset

As always, moderation matters, and not every dog tolerates herbs the same way.

Also important:
โš ๏ธ avoid picking dandelions from sprayed lawns, roadsides, or areas treated with herbicides/pesticides.

Nature is pretty neat sometimes ๐Ÿค“๐Ÿพ

Folic acid = the synthetic form of folate

Itโ€™s commonly added to:
โ€ข kibble
โ€ข fortified treats (especially wheat-based)
โ€ข some freeze-dried raw
โ€ข some โ€œbalancedโ€ raw products

Folic acid isnโ€™t the same as natural folate from food.

It has to be converted in the body before it can be used.

And that conversion depends on:
โ€ข enzymes
โ€ข liver function
โ€ข overall methylation capacity

Some dogs (and people) donโ€™t convert it efficiently.

Methylation is involved in:
โ€ข detox pathways
โ€ข histamine breakdown
โ€ข immune regulation
โ€ข skin + gut health

So if this pathway is under stress

You might see:
โ€ข persistent โ€œallergyโ€ symptoms
โ€ข histamine flares
โ€ข skin or ear issues that wonโ€™t fully resolve

We donโ€™t have great canine-specific data hereโ€ฆ

But in humans, higher or chronic intake of folic acid can lead to:
unmetabolized folic acid (UMFA)

This happens when intake exceeds the bodyโ€™s ability to convert it.

UMFA has been associated with:
โ€ข interference with normal folate metabolism
โ€ข masking of B12 deficiency
โ€ข altered immune signalling
โ€ข potential impacts on methylation balance

Some research also suggests it may influence:
โ€ข histamine pathways
โ€ข inflammatory responses

Now โ€” this doesnโ€™t mean folic acid is โ€œtoxicโ€

But it does reinforce:
more isnโ€™t always betterโ€ฆ especially with synthetic forms

Even if your dog eats well, folic acid can still sneak in through:

โ€ข kibble formulas
โ€ข biscuits / training treats
โ€ข fortified or wheat-based products
โ€ข some commercial raw options

This doesnโ€™t mean itโ€™s โ€œbadโ€โ€ฆ

But in sensitive dogs, itโ€™s something to be aware of.

Most dogs tolerate folic acid just fine.

This is not a panic post.

But in dogs with:
โ€ข chronic โ€œallergiesโ€
โ€ข histamine-type patterns
โ€ข slow or incomplete progress

It can be one more layer to consider

When I formulate:

I may use a B-complex with folic acid (for ease + access)
โ€ข but I usually donโ€™t keep it long-term
โ€ข once levels are stable, I prefer:
โ€ข food-based B vitamins
โ€ข folinic acid
โ€ข or a B-complex without folic acid

That saidโ€ฆ

Not every option is accessible to every clientโ€”and thatโ€™s okay!

We work with whatโ€™s realistic.

If your dog is still struggling despite doing โ€œeverything rightโ€โ€ฆ

Donโ€™t forget:
itโ€™s not always about adding more

Sometimes itโ€™s about:
removing subtle inputs the body isnโ€™t handling well

Folic acid isnโ€™t always the issueโ€ฆ

But in the right dog, it might be part of the picture.

For dogs with mild to moderate stress, nervousness, or overstimulationโ€ฆ herbs can sometimes be a really nice support tool.

A few I commonly use include:
โ€ข lemon balm
American skullcap
Rescue Remedy

Lemon balm is often used for:
โ€ข emotional tension
โ€ข restlessness
โ€ข nervous tummy & stress
โ€ข sensitive or overwhelmed dogs

American skullcap is more for:
โ€ข overstimulation
โ€ข tension
โ€ข hyper-alert โ€œcanโ€™t settleโ€ energy
โ€ข nervous system support

These herbs are generally not intended to heavily sedate dogs or โ€œknock them outโ€

Instead, theyโ€™re often used to help support a calmer, more regulated nervous system during things like:
โ€ข grooming appointments
โ€ข vet visits
โ€ข travel
โ€ข fireworks
โ€ข stressful outings

And Rescue Remedy is an easy add because itโ€™s simple, gentle, and widely available.

That saidโ€ฆ other flower essences may sometimes be more appropriate depending on the dog and situation ๐ŸŒธ

Every dog is different, and herbs are still biologically active, so always start low and slow.
