The Get REAL Movement Presents📢 Justice On & Off Screen: Combating Anti-Black Racism in Film

Today’s conversations about justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion (JEDI) in the film industry are evolving rapidly. Creatives, producers, educators, and organizations are being called to move beyond statements of support to build workplaces, classrooms, sets, and stories that actively reflect care, accountability, and representation.

At Get REAL, we know that film has the power to shape culture. That’s why, informed by interviews and consultations with more than 20 Black creatives in Canada’s film industry (led by Peabody Award–winning director Lucah Rosenberg-Lee), insights gained through running our annual Black Film Festival, which will celebrate its fourth year in 2026, and made possible by funding from the Government of Canada’s Department of Heritage, we’ve developed a series of free workshops that bring those same values of community, creativity, and courage directly to the industry.

Atlantic Canada’s Screen Industry in Focus

The Canada Media Fund (CMF) has released a four-episode series highlighting the television and film industry across Atlantic Canada.

The final episode (Episode 4), filmed during the FICFA Film Festival in Moncton, was released December 17th and features insights from our very own Board member. The episode concludes with a strong message emphasizing that New Brunswick must invest more in its screen industry, a perspective supported by CMF and intentionally highlighted as the closing statement of the series.

We encourage our members and community to watch and learn more about the opportunities and challenges facing our industry in Atlantic Canada.

L’industrie de l’écran du Canada atlantique à l’honneur

Le Fonds des médias du Canada (FMC) a lancé une série de quatre épisodes mettant en lumière l’industrie de la télévision et du cinéma dans le Canada atlantique.

Le dernier épisode (épisode 4), tourné lors du Festival international du cinéma francophone en Acadie (FICFA) à Moncton, est maintenant en ligne et présente le point de vue de l’un·e de nos membres du conseil d’administration. L’épisode se conclut par un message fort soulignant que le gouvernement du Nouveau-Brunswick n’investit pas suffisamment dans notre industrie, une position appuyée par le FMC et mise de l’avant comme conclusion de la série.

Nous invitons nos membres et la communauté à visionner cette série pour en apprendre davantage sur les réalités et les enjeux de notre industrie dans le Canada atlantique.

$1 billion in production. Not long ago it we hard to imagine Newfoundland and Labrador hosting productions from Apple, Disney, or Netflix.

Seeing productions like Severance filmed here and knowing how busy the year has been is a reminder of what’s possible when you invest in people and their potential.

I’m incredibly proud to have played a part in that journey during my time in office.
